What’s the story?

On a very recent edition of the Why Not Now? Podcast, WWE Smackdown Live superstar Daniel Bryan opened up about what prompted and motivated him to fight for a return to in-ring competition in the WWE.

In case you didn’t know…

As noted, earlier in the month of March, WWE doctors finally decided to medically clear the former four-time WWE World Champion Bryan and thus, allowing him to compete and wrestle in the ring for the first time in almost two and a half years.

At WrestleMania 34, Bryan finally made his much-awaited in-ring return when he teamed up with Smackdown Live Commissioner Shane McMahon in order to team up against the duo of Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens in a match-winning effort.

The heart of the matter

While speaking to Amy Jo Martin on the Why Not Now? Podcast, former four-time WWE World Champion Bryan specifically opened up about which match in the WWE motivated him to fight for a return to in-ring competition in the WWE.

According to Bryan, it was apparently a showdown between current WWE Champion AJ Styles and former champion Dean Ambrose that inspired ‘The American Dragon’ to make a comeback to the squared circle.

As noted, Bryan stated that during that particular match between Styles and Ambrose, the former Smackdown Live General Manager was sitting at ringside and watching the two men put on an absolutely stellar performance in the ring, with the crowd being in an equally crazy mood as well and it was during that exact moment when Bryan decided to refuse a career outside of the wrestling ring.  "I had been cleared by several neurologists, well known neurologists from all over the country, and they still wouldn't clear me to wrestle, the WWE wouldn't clear me to wrestle, but these other neurologists had. But I had accepted it at some point and just been like, 'okay, pro wrestling had been my dream since I was a little kid, right? And I had a good 16 years in, and all of that kind of stuff. And I kind of accepted it as 'maybe it was dangerous' and that sort of thing, but I was sitting by the ring watching a match. They had me in this role, this non-wrestling role, the General Manager of the show, sit out by the ring and I was watching these guys wrestle and they were two of my friends that I had known for years, right? A guy named Dean Ambrose and AJ Styles. And I was sitting there and they're both really good, and the crowd's going crazy, and I was like, 'I refuse to accept this!'" Bryan added, "it took me another year-and-a-half before I got cleared, but I did it!"

What’s next?

Bryan is currently performing on the blue brand of Smackdown Live, where is engaged in an on-going feud with SD Live’s newest superstar Big Cass.

Author’s Take

Bryan’s return to the ring is definitely one of the greatest comebacks of all time and is certain to go down as one of the best comeback stories of all time as well.
