Does The Undertaker need to return one last time?
Mark William Calaway, better known as the legendary Undertaker, has enthralled the WWE universe since his debut as the Million Dollar Man Ted DiBiase's secret weapon, all the way back at Survivor Series in 1990.
One of many reasons the man should be commended is the fact that he was, and still is, respected for portraying a gimmick which we all know is not realistically possible unless one does believe in dark magic.
Such is the love for the man, that even after being confirmed to be retired in every way short of a formal announcement, people want him to don his iconic attire for "one more last ride".
What we don't realize is that if our wish of an Undertaker return comes true at WrestleMania 34, his nearly perfect career will have a blemished ending. Up until WrestleMania 30, the Undertaker was undefeated at this event, and to utilize the streak to the maximum, they had Brock Lesnar end it, launching him into a level of stardom no one else in the roster of that time could achieve.
That moment created a Beast (pun intended) which rampaged through everyone and showcased utter dominance and until now, disregarding the Lesnar-Goldberg feud, Brock has used that victory to be the monster one had to beat to attain eternal greatness. In comes Roman Reigns.
After the streak ended, Undertaker continued to wrestle and at WrestleMania 33, he faced the man who would give him his second defeat at the Grandest Stage of Them All. Now the situation is that Roman Reigns should be the greatest considering be beat the Undertaker at WrestleMania. But he isn't as it has been done before. It is only logical that Roman has to beat Brock too in order to be on the No. 1 spot.
Now many people would have different problems with the way things went. Why Brock? Why Reigns? Why not someone else?
Under all these questions we failed to acknowledge the fact that the WWE used such an extensive and the streak-centred storyline to determine the next frontrunner for their company. They did so because of what the Undertaker has done for them.
This is the ultimate tribute for the man who gave his all for the company and if he were to return, the whole Lesnar-Reigns storyline won't be the guy who broke the streak vs the guy who ended the career. It would mean much less, and anything less wouldn't be fit for someone like the Undertaker.
There's no better time for the Undertaker to formally retire than now. With matches like Asuka vs Charlotte and AJ Styles vs Shinsuke Nakamura, the quality of this year's WrestleMania is going to be in safe hands. Moreover, taking the fact that he is well past his prime and has nothing left to prove, returning to the squared ring wouldn't be the best decision for him.
Bearing all of this in mind, the Undertaker does not need to return.
