Edge on Lana, his WWE Network show, making jokes on Hulk Hogan and more
It is sometimes hard to believe that Edge has been retired from Pro Wrestling for over four and a half years now. Since leaving WWE, he has done quite a few things, but acting has been his prime focus. He has landed roles on tv shows such as Haven and Flash. He co-starred with Lana in a WWE film titled Interrogation.
This was Edge’ s first time working with Lana in any role, as she came into WWE long after he had retired. However, Edge had lot of praise for The Ravishing Russian when he was asked about her in an interview with SI.com:
“She’s got her own thing going on. It’s very Brigitte Nielsen from “Rocky IV,” but that’s not a bad thing. That’s one of my favourite movies of all time. She came in, she was prepared, well-prepped, she had a lot of work in her lap that she had to do. She had five days to film all of her scenes, and her scenes were very action-oriented.”
He further described a scene that Lana had to do:
“She had to do something on the computer, grab the phone and talk to someone, interact with my character who walks in, and then back to the phone, to the cell phone, and the landline. That’s a lot of challenging stuff, all the while being aware of your camera angles, lighting, get all of her scenes done and then go back on the road – and she came in, was a total pro, killed it, and was right back on the road. WWE is great training for stuff like that.”
Another notable gig that Edge had this year was with his best friend and former tag team partner Christian in the WWE Network show titled The Edge and Christian Show That Totally Reeks of Awesomeness. The unique comedy show featured multiple skit segments between the two and several WWE personalities including the ones backstage.
A lot of it was improv, but the show touched upon several topics that WWE usually never dare to – such as CM Punk’s UFC fight, Hulk Hogan, Lana’s backstage “heat”, Cesaro’s push, Rob Van Dam’s weed smoking habits, AJ Styles TNA tenure, and so much more. When asked about making jokes on the show, Edge said:
“I still don’t know. I think it’s because they realised we weren’t going to do it unless they did that. They want different content, and they knew we would bring a completely different show to that network—different to the point where a lot of people weren’t going to get it at first—but if they stuck with it, they’d eventually see the vision of what we had in mind, which is a show purely for wrestling fans.
He spoke about the mainstream appeal (or a lack thereof) for the show:
If you’re not a wrestling fan, you’re not going to get our show. And honestly, we don’t care. This is for the people who love it, that get the weird Dungeon-of-Doom-Hulk Hogan references.
If you sit down to watch with your girlfriend, and she’s never watched wrestling, she’s going to say, ‘This is the stupidest show ever created,’ and maybe it is. But wrestling fans are going to get it, and that’s what we went for. I don’t know how we got away with a lot of it, but we would just write it and do it, and we got away with it.
At the end of the day, we make fun of each other more than we do anyone else, so it’s all very tongue-in-cheek. If anyone gets offended, they take themselves too seriously. We jump around in tights for a living, you can only take it so seriously.”
It is not certain at this point as to whether there will be a season two of The Edge & Christian Show That Totally Reeks of Awesomeness, but Edge has hinted at it recently. Whatever it is, the WWE Universe will always accept Edge back with open arms. He will likely continue doing films for WWE time and again as well.
