Edge's career began with inflicting a neck injury and ended with getting one himself
The Rated-R Superstar, Edge, is an eleven-time World Champion and a WWE Hall Of Famer. As one of his shirts in the past said: “Done it all, Won it all”. And indeed he had. The WWE legend turned 43 yesterday, and here is a fun fact, or non-fun fact, depending on your perspective.
Edge’s first match in the WWE saw him break his opponent, José Estrada Jr.’s neck in June of 1998. The irony of the situation is that he ended up retiring from a broken neck. Here is a clip of Edge’s first match with the WWE over 18 years ago:
Apart from being an eleven-time World Champion, Edge has also been a 13-time Tag Team Champion (both World and WWE), 5-time Intercontinental Champion, one-time US Champion, 2010 Royal Rumble winner, 2005 Money in the Bank winner, and the 2001 King of the Ring.
He also main evented Wrestlemania 24 with The Undertaker, something which he considers the greatest match of his career, and also the greatest sense of acknowledgement by WWE towards his abilities.
His last match was against Alberto Del Rio at Wrestlemania 27. It was around this time that his neck injuries started catching up to him. After he got a medical test done, he got a call from Vince McMahon himself telling him that he has to retire.
He said that while he did feel sorry for himself, and the fact that he was not able to retire on his own terms, his best friend Christian reminded him that he had his whole career on his own terms.
Had he not retired, it is not known what role Edge would have transitioned to, but upon his own admission more than a year later in an interview with Sam Roberts, he said that the plan was for him to have a retirement match against Christian at Wrestlemania 28, where Christian would have won.
