Interview with Sheamus: "Maybe McGregor can join the Cruiserweight Division"

We caught up with the Celtic Warrior- Sheamus and had a very interesting chat

Sheamus is not dressed in his ring gear, for his India tour. In fact, he is dressed in such a neat and dapper manner, that one has to look twice to ensure that he’s the same man who decimates his competition in the ring, in absolutely stiff and power packed contests. But when we chat with him, we realise that he’s an intelligent man with an excellent sense of humor.

He loves the art of professional wrestling and is still hungry to reach the top. Whatever position he’s given, he’s keen to make the most of it. Here’s what we learned from our chat with the Celtic Conqueror.

SK: We saw WWE Live in India, not so long back...but we missed you in the roster then...

Sheamus: I wasn’t part of the Live Event because they were running two shows at the time. I told somebody the other day that because of the brand splits there’s a lot of jumbling of talent right now. If Raw comes here next time, I’m here. As long as I’m on Raw. I’m coming next time. We’ll figure it out. I got to see a lot more of India like this anyway.

SK: What makes you and Cesaro such a perfect pair, whether you’re working against each other or with each other?

Sheamus: Are we a perfect pair? I didn't think we are a perfect pair at all! I thought we are the opposite of a perfect pair. (Laughs). We’re the most dysfunctional tag team ever. I think when we wrestle each other, we bring out the best.

It’s always a competition with us. We hit hard. We literally try and beat each other up. We’re Europeans. We followed the same kind of path to get to America and WWE. So we have a different mindset, and we’ve sacrificed a lot more. I’ve been on top and he hasn’t. The matches themselves were...2 guys went out there and …

SK: ...The 7th match (at Clash of Champions) especially was incredible...

Sheamus: Thank you. We just went out there to steal the show and we did. So yeah, now we’re a tag team for some reason but I’m trying to make it work. He irritates the hell out of me. And I think I irritate the hell out of him. So it’s going to be interesting to see what happens.

SK: How do you like being a tag team wrestler, after being a singles wrestler for so long?

Sheamus: There are a couple of things I’ve never achieved in WWE in the short time that I’ve been there. One is the IC title and the other one is the Tag Team championship. As much as it pains me to say that I have to team up with Cesaro, I definitely think that if we can get on the same page to win the Tag Team Championship, it’ll be another accolade for me. Another trophy. Which...I mean, I’m close to a full collection. It’s unbelievable.

SK: Now let’s talk about Wrestlemania 32. You were part of one of the biggest moments of Wrestlemania when 3 legends from the Attitude Era came back, in the segment with The League of Nations. How did it feel with a 100,000 people in attendance?

Sheamus: Shawn Michaels, Mick Foley and Stone Cold Steve Austin were part of the biggest moment in WWE History, being in there with The League of nations. They were very nervous walking down to the ring. We’d been through a crazy match with The New Day, and they took advantage of the situation. On any other given day, we’d have kicked their asses. (Laughs)

SK: Don’t hit us, but what do you think of the ‘You Look Stupid’ chants?

Sheamus: I think the people who say ‘You Look Stupid’, need to take a good, hard look in the mirror. I think they’re jealous of just how good looking I am. I pity every single one of them.

SK: (Laughter) Perfect. Do you prefer working as a babyface or as a heel?

Sheamus: I prefer working. Full Stop. I just want to be in the ring. Doesn't matter what I’m doing as long as I’m having fun. I’ve been sidelined twice before, so I want to go there and have fun, tear the house down and beat the crap out of my opponent.

I want to have a great successful day at the office. I just love performing. Boo me, cheer me. If people are throwing popcorn at me, if women are throwing knickers at me...doesn’t matter as long as I’m having fun.

SK: Do members of the main roster feel threatened by NXT talent coming up?

Sheamus: They shouldn't. They should see it as a challenge. I don’t. I wrestled Apollo Crews, I really enjoyed it and I wish it had gone a little bit further because he helped rejuvenate me. I got to go in there with a new guy, fresh blood. Everyone in that roster should see this as a chance to step up their game. Y’know, step up or step out.

SK: Who would you say is the best in-ring worker right now?

Sheamus: Cesaro. I mean I am, but Cesaro behind me.

SK: In your initial days, who were some people who helped you get started?

Sheamus: Triple H was a big help to me. William Regal came on the road with me, when I first came up from FCW. And of course, Fit Finlay used to assist me on a daily basis as well. He’s not just a mentor but also a great friend.

Sheamus was great company, and a delight to chat with

SK: You mentioned FCW. Do you feel that you missed the whole NXT boom?

Sheamus: No I’m fine with that. I didn’t need NXT to come to the main roster. When I came up nobody knew who I was and I had to start from scratch. And it was a great challenge for me. I really enjoyed the fact that I didn’t come from NXT.

You know different times...maybe things would have worked out differently. But I’m glad that nobody knew who I was and there was this shock factor...pale skinned new guy. With NXT it’s great because everyone knows who they are. But I’m happy the way I came up.

SK: As an Irishman yourself, there’s been a boom of wrestlers coming up to the main roster. There’s been Finn Balor, there's been Becky Lynch...do you think Conor McGregor will eventually come to WWE?

Sheamus: I really don’t know. As far as I know he’s still going to be fighting for a really long time. I mean there’s a Cruiserweight Division now, so maybe McGregor can join the Cruiserweight Division. But I really don’t know...it’s really up to him.

He's obviously got a lot of charisma,I don’t know...if Vince McMahon feels that there’s an opportunity to make money he’ll be here.

SK: What did you think of Conor McGregor’s comments on WWE?

Sheamus: I thought it was a publicity stunt. That’s all it was. Summerslam was a day after his PPV. He’d lost a lot of steam. I said so in the tweet I sent out. He was just trying to sell tickets. That’s all it was.

SK: Who’s your dream Wrestlemania opponent?

Sheamus: Whose dream is it to face me? Everybody’s. Who’s brave enough though? I’m tired of talking about my dream opponent. Anyone who’s brave enough to get inside the ring with me is my dream opponent really!
