What’s the story?

WWE announced four big events planned for the Barclay Center during their WrestleMania press conference.

The Brooklyn, New York venue will host the 2019 Hall of Fame Ceremony, NXT Takeover: Brooklyn 5 as well as Monday Night Raw and SmackDown Live episodes during the weekend of WrestleMania 35.

In case you didn’t know

The company’s history with the Barclay Center dates back to the 2012 edition of the TLC: Tables, Ladder’s and Chairs pay-per-view which was the first WWE event to take place at the venue.

The Barclay Center would become synonymous with SummerSlam Weekend in 2015 featuring NXT Takeover: Brooklyn, SummerSlam and the subsequent Raw and SmackDown episodes.

The heart of the matter

Despite the WWE’s preference for the venue, the Barclay Center has never held a WWE Hall of Fame Ceremony.

The 2013 Hall of Fame Ceremony emanated from Madison Square Garden in New York City on Saturday April 6, 2013 with the inductions of Bruno Sammartino, Bob Backlund, Mick Foley, Booker T, Trish Stratus and the U.S. President Donald Trump.

The Raw and SmackDown episodes after WrestleMania 29 took place at the Izod Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey and the TD Gardens in Boston, Massachusetts respectfully.

The Raw after WrestleMania 29 is credited by WWE for kickstarting the chaotic environment that has engulfed every post-WrestleMania episode since 2013.

With WrestleMania 35 taking place at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, the four events scheduled for the Barclay Center will mark the first time since 2015 that the company doesn’t hold a major main roster pay-per-view event during the wrestling festivities.

What’s next?

WWE always sells out tickets when they go to the Barclay Center, so they’ll be expected to make a killing next year for WrestleMania 35 weekend.

There is a superstar shakeup expected to occur after WrestleMania 34, so it will be interesting to see how different the rosters are for the 2019 events.

Author’s Take

WWE’s relationship with the Barclay Center continues to grow and it’s becoming clear that the company prefers the New York venue over other places they’ve held shows.
