From the WWE Rumor Mill: More cross-brand matches could be added to Survivor Series

The Survivor Series is one of four pay per views featuring both Raw and SmackDown

What's the story?

Recently, Dave Meltzer discussed the upcoming Survivor Series pay per view on Wrestling Observer Radio.

He believes that on top of the rumoured Brock Lesnar v. Jinder Mahal match, there could be more matches added to the card featuring a Monday Night Raw wrestler against someone from SmackDown Live.

In case you didn't know...

The Survivor Series is one of the oldest running pay-per-views in the WWE. Its first edition was held in 1987 from Richfield Township, Ohio. Back then, every match on the card was in the five-on-five or ten-on-ten format.

The main event of the first Survivor Series saw a team led by Bobby "The Brain" Heenan that consisted of Andre The Giant, Butch Reed, King Kong Bundy, One Man Gang, and Rick Rude defeating the team of Hulk Hogan, Bam Bam Bigelow, Don Muraco, Ken Patera, and Paul Orndorff.

This year's Survivor Series will take place at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas, on November 19th.

The heart of the matter

While there are two rumoured matches with Lesnar vs Jinder and Sami Zayn & Kevin Owens vs AJ Styles & Shane McMahon, there are no officially announced matches at the time of this writing.

Meltzer did not elaborate about any details of what cross-branded matches could occur. For the most part, wrestlers have stayed on their own brands since the brand split last year, but the Commissioner and General Manager have travelled to the opposite show to work out a match in the past.

What's next?

Monday Night Raw and SmackDown Live are on the horizon this week. Tonight's edition of Raw will be the go-home show before Tables, Ladders and Chairs live from the Target Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The headlining match of that pay-per-view is the reunion of The Shield as they take on The Miz, Cesaro, Sheamus, and Braun Strowman in a handicap match.

Author's take

I'm all about having cross-branded matches on the "big four" pay-per-views because it's fresh now that they're separated into Raw and SmackDown.

Assuming that Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn are taking on AJ Styles and Shane McMahon (as rumoured), I would pair Shinsuke Nakamura in a match with Matt Hardy. I'd also love to see a Bobby Roode and Samoa Joe match because those two can definitely work an amazing match together.

If the tag match doesn't happen, I would love for a Bullet Club reunion including Styles, Gallows & Anderson, and Finn Balor to take on The Shield and maybe Nakamura (who has feuded with the Bullet Club in New Japan Pro Wrestling).
