From the WWE Rumor Mill: Original plans for Mixed Match Challenge did not feature male wrestlers
What's the story?
The WWE recently announced a new show on Facebook with the Mixed Match Challenge being streamed on the social networking site.
The show would pair a male and female star as a tag-team and the winners of the competition would receive $100,000 to donate to a charity of their choice.
While the format does provide a different angle to competitive matches in the WWE, Ryan Satin of Pro Wrestling Sheet believes that the original plan for the show was completely different.
In case you didn't know...
The Mixed Match Challenge features RAW and SmackDown Live pair-ups who will be facing off for a chance to win $100,000.
The competition will stream exclusively on Facebook on Tuesday nights, starting from January 16, 2018.
The heart of the matter
Satin suggests that the actual show was not going to feature any male wrestlers and it would have focused on the female wrestlers from all three brands: RAW, SmackDown Live and NXT.
However, that was scrapped and we now have the Mixed Match Challenge in place.
What's next?
A number of pairings will be surfacing for the competition and this should be one of the more exciting events to have come out from the WWE in recent months.
Author's take
While the WWE has certainly upped its game by promoting more female wrestlers in the past year or so, we already have a female-centric show in Total Divas. Granted the roster for the show is limited and we don’t really see NXT wrestlers all that often, having another female-centric show might have been one too many.
We will get to see the likes of Nia Jax, Braun Strowman, Samoa Joe, Naomi, Sami Zayn, Charlotte and a whole host of other stars compete in the challenge and, hopefully, it will be a fantastic competition for a worthy cause.
