From the WWE Rumor Mill: Possible championship match for Royal Rumble
What’s the story?
The WWE has sent out an intriguing statement about the Cruiserweight Championship match that transpired on RAW last night.
Addressing the current situation regarding the Cruiserweight title, the WWE is alluding that Cedric Alexander may indeed receive his title rematch against Enzo Amore at the Royal Rumble PPV, and not before that, since Amore seems to need time to recover from the injuries he sustained on RAW this week.
In case you didn’t know…
Enzo Amore made his on-screen return after a brief flu-induced hiatus and defended his WWE Cruiserweight Championship against Cedric Alexander.
The matchup which transpired on this week’s episode of Monday Night RAW, saw Amore get busted open and possibly hurt his ankle; following which he lost the match by way of Count-Out. However, as a title generally doesn’t change hands by way of Count-Out or Disqualification, despite Alexander winning, Amore retained his Cruiserweight Championship.
The heart of the matter
The WWE sent out a brief statement ahead of tonight’s 205 Live tapings—a few excerpts of which can be read below—
“The flurry of offence from Alexander in the latter half of the match was overwhelming for Enzo, who also suffered a cut above the eye. Alexander's speed and athleticism proved to be the deciding factor, and a victory against the champion gives Alexander a great case for another opportunity. Will he get another chance, or will The Certified G find a way to keep Alexander from his coveted title?”
Furthermore, besides WWE alluding that Alexander may get his title rematch against Amore at a later date, likely the Royal Rumble PPV; WWE is also acknowledging the potential alliance between Alexander and Goldust—something that may impact the outcome of the ongoing Alexander vs. Amore feud.
What’s next?
Fans can expect Cedric Alexander and Enzo Amore to continue their rivalry over the WWE Cruiserweight Championship in the days to come.
The feud is likely to culminate in a Cruiserweight Championship match at the Royal Rumble pay-per-view that takes place at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on January 28th.
Author’s take
Honestly speaking, Enzo Amore might just have salvaged the Cruiserweight Division.
Love him or hate him, one can’t deny that the Certified G is as charismatic as they come. Nevertheless, with that being said, there is a very high probability that Cedric Alexander may dethrone him as the Cruiserweight Champion as WWE management seem to be considerably high on the latter. The 2018 Royal Rumble card is shaping up to be truly phenomenal.
