From the WWE Rumor Mill: Potential reason behind quick title changes that happened recently
What’s the story?
According to Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Radio, Vince McMahon is the man behind the quick title changes that happened recently in the WWE.
The Raw Women’s championship, the Cruiserweight championship and the SmackDown Tag Team championship saw quick title changes recently.
In case you didn’t know…
After winning the Raw Women’s championship from Alexa Bliss at SummerSlam, Sasha Banks dropped the title back to Alexa a week later on Monday Night Raw. A similar situation occurred with Akira Tozawa as well when he dropped his title just six days after winning it from Neville.
Former SmackDown Tag Team champions The New Day, meanwhile, had a lengthier reign compared to Banks and Tozawa. They held the title for nearly a month before The Usos won it back at SummerSlam.
The heart of the matter
Meltzer speculates that Vince McMahon currently wants quick title changes to happen.
As per the report, the WWE boss's idea was to let the heels drop the title on television so as to create some extra buzz among the fans.
What’s next?
All three champions mentioned in the rumour are fresh into their latest title reign. Alexa was attacked by Nia Jax after the title win and the fallout of the same is yet to be revealed by WWE.
Neville has drawn battle lines with Enzo Amore; meanwhile, the SmackDown Tag Team division has some exciting feuds to offer for The Usos.
Author’s take
If the rumour is indeed true, we might see more such changes going forward. However, these are hard for the fans to digest. WWE’s hot potato treatment of the Championship is often met with criticism from fans and it was no different in the last three cases as well.
