From the WWE Rumor Mill: Sign that WWE might be done with Shield reunion
What's the story?
Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter touched on an interesting tidbit that could indicate that the WWE no longer have the Shield faction of Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose in their plans going forward.
In case you didn't know...
The Shield reunion was one of WWE's hottest story-lines going into the second half of 2017 and it looked like the trio was going to reach new heights of popularity within the company. However, the Shield return was cut short, first by Roman Reign's having to sit out TLC due to a viral illness and then by Dean Ambrose suffering an arm injury and requiring surgery.
The heart of the matter
These unfortunate events effectively derailed all the momentum gained by the coming together of Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose to reform the Shield and all of the buzz and excitement petered out, so much so that it barely seems like the Shield reunited at all.
So are the WWE done with the Shield? The truth is no-one truly knows yet and there is always the possibility of the Shield coming back as long as all three Superstars still work for the company, but there was a small tidbit in this week's Wrestling Observer that could indicate the WWE are wrapping things up with the group.
"These are some WWE video releases between now and the end of the year...The Shield Rise and Fall on 7/9"
This DVD announcement was buried in a list of home video releases from the company, but it could have greater significance as it seems to be recapping and documenting the career of the Shield, with an emphasis on 'fall' meaning that they're possibly over.
What's next?
Whilst it was great seeing Rollins, Reigns and Ambrose back together it seems that they're all destined for different things with Reigns a clear favourite to take the Universal Title off of Lesnar and Rollins seemingly set for a transfer to SmackDown. As a result, it could be some time until we see the three men together again, if indeed we do at all!
Author's take
Clearly this is highly speculative and based entirely on the release of a DVD and obviously in wrestling even though their might be no creative plans for The Shield now, there might be some later. But it's still worth noting.
