From the WWE Rumor Mill: Slammy Awards set for a return?
What's the story?
The WWE Slammy Awards used to be a night when the WWE recognized their top talents and matches of the year, but there hasn't been a sign of the event for some time. Mike Johnson from PW Insider recently opened up about what happened to the big WWE award show.
In case you didn't know
The Slammy Award ceremony has been around for a very long time starting in 1986 and although there have been breaks throughout the years, it was a pretty consistent source of entertainment.
Owen Hart made his two Slammy Award wins mean a lot as he carried them both to the ring with him. It was really a great gimmick WWE could utilise for some cool purposes.
Heart of the matter
Mike Johnson said on PW Insider that WWE stopped doing the annual award ceremony known as the Slammys last year because they were looking for a new idea so they simply didn't bring it back.
He went on to say that while there is no current discussion to bring back the Slammy Award ceremony, he speculates that the gimmick will be back in a couple years.
What's next?
Hopefully, as the WWE Universe continues to evolve the Slammys will come back because it was always a good time. Although not a lot of serious wrestling storyline progression occurred during the event, it was still fun.
Author's take
I miss the days when the Slammy Award ceremony felt like a special deal. It could be hosted in a big hall with wrestlers all sitting at tables where they had dinner or drinks and it was a casual kind of atmosphere where you felt like you were watching something special.
Who knows how the Slammy Awards might pop back up? If WWE Mixed Match Challenge goes well enough we very well could see it on Facebook Watch down the line as well.
