WWE News: Details regarding Macho Man and Stephanie McMahon's past dalliance revealed
What's the story?
Professional wrestling is full of controversial and intriguing stories. Rumor and innuendo fill practically every corner of the landscape and everybody loves a provocative story.
A rumour that withstood the test of time seems to imply that Stephanie McMahon and Randy Savage had an intimate relationship, but according to Wrestling Observer forum, those rumours might have finally met their match.
In case you didn't know...
"Macho Man" Randy Savage was a huge name in professional wrestling. When The Mega Powers exploded, so did Savage. He found himself a bonified Superstar thanks to the association with Hulk Hogan and incredible talent in the ring.
But Savage and Hulkster's relationship would soon end and the same was said of Macho Man and WWE. Many people wonder what could have been the reason for this falling out. According to the reports, Randy Savage wasn't mentioned along with the greats for many years and was left out of several forms of WWE media.
Some people theorized Savage and a young Stephanie McMahon had a relationship behind closed doors which ostracized Macho Man from the company.
Randy Savage sadly passed away in 2011 and he was posthumously inducted into the WWE Hall Of Fame in 2015.
The heart of the matter
The rumours about Savage and Stephanie McMahon's relationship have been a hot topic of conversation and tantalized many for years.
The Wrestling Observer forum created a timeline of events in order to determine the actual start of this rumour. It was discovered that Savage praised WWE and Vince McMahon during interviews in 2000, 2001, and 2003, therefore, the rumour probably originated after this time.
Randy Savage was interviewed by WWE Magazine in 2003 to discuss the passing of Miss Elizabeth and promote his rap album (if you haven't heard "Ba A Man" yet it's a treasure). It's unlikely there was much heat between Savage and WWE at that point in 2003.
But things appeared to take a turn for the worse in 2004 when Triple H gave his thoughts on Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage particularly. Triple H described them as "dinosaurs" and that didn't set too well with Savage.
Macho Man released a video on the "members only" portion of his website where he dissed Triple H and said he was going to steal his girl, Stephanie McMahon. Savage said some more things about other wrestlers in the video, but it was what he said about Triple H which really piqued the interest of conspiracy theorists.
A topic was started later in 2004 on the Death Valley Driver message board. This thread encouraged members to spread the most scandalous stories concerning pro wrestling they could. Even if they had to make them up. While some of the stories shared in the thread were pulled from interviews, others were created out of thin air.
One user using the alias G. Gordon Liddy wrote, "Macho had his way with Stephanie (she was about 14 then) back in 94/95 and that Vince found out and that was the true ending for Macho Man in WWF." In reality, even if this was even true, Stephanie McMahon was 18 in 1994.
It didn't take long for the rumours about Stephanie McMahon and Randy Savage to spread like wildfire. Some stories were tamer than others with the most extreme instances having to do with Linda McMahon hiding an abortion from Vince due to Stephanie and Savage's relationship.
Savage was later highlighted in the WWE All-Stars game commercials in 2011 which certainly would not have happened if Macho Man and Stephanie McMahon had that sort of relationship.
Bruce Prichard has also come out against these rumours dismissing them definitively on his podcast "Something To Wrestle With."
The fact is this entire scandal originated from the comments Randy Savage made off-handedly about Triple H and Stephanie during the "members only" video featured above.
It is understandable that Triple H, Stephanie McMahon, and even Vince McMahon would have been upset by what Savage said. But it wasn't until 2004 when the rumour was actually created on a message board about wrestling urban legends.
What's next
As pro wrestling evolves, even more, there are bound to be more stories like pop up. But the important part is to not feed into a rumour until it's actually been proven to be a fact.
In a world full of fake news this is sometimes hard to do. But it is always important to try and be an example of enlightenment for those around you in order to encourage other responsible decisions in what kind of stories you pass as factual.
Author's take
This entire situation is a grand example of something that got out of hand way too quickly. It also gives a clear illustration of the power of the internet.
When this rumour was started in 2004, it immediately seemed to have a decade-long backstory to it. Nobody bothered to fact-check which is essential in telling any kind of story.
Randy Savage's reputation might have actually taken a hit due to these rumours because fans started to read into things that weren't there. But as the truth begins to set us free we can realize it all boiled down to Triple H calling Randy Savage a dinosaur during an interview nearly 15 years ago.
