From the WWE Rumor Mill: Why the John Cena-Undertaker clash was kept short

What's the story?

Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter recently shared why John Cena's dream clash with The Undertaker at WrestleMania 34 was so short.

The match-up was teased for a number of months leading to WrestleMania but it was a little surprising seeing The Undertaker squash the former WWE Champion.

In case you didn't know...

There was a lot of speculation about who John Cena's opponent would be at WrestleMania 34 given "The Champ" was not involved in any of the title battles at the showpiece event.

Cena went on a bit of a promo spree almost begging "The Deadman" to face him and he did get his wish, ultimately.

The heart of the matter

According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, the reason the WWE did not promote the match all that much was that they did not want the fans to have high expectations from the clash. In fact, they did not even want it to be seen as the main event.

Meltzer also added that the match was made months ago but the WWE knew that Taker would be able to fight Cena for a long time in the ring.

This was the reason why they did not push the match all that much even though The Undertaker would be present at WrestleMania 34 but the fight would not be all that great.

What's next?

Cena is expected to stay off WWE programming for a few weeks, especially after his loss to the Undertaker.

However, he has been thinking about his career in the WWE and isn't sure how things will end.

Author's take

It was not that big a surprise seeing The Undertaker in the ring at WrestleMania and even if Cena did get squashed, the result didn't really hurt either superstar.

The WWE did take the right decision in keeping the match short and ensured there were no poor spots during the three-minute or so fight.

It will be interesting to see just how Cena does return to the WWE and hopefully, he will have another championship run sooner rather than later.
