What's the story?

With the Women's Revolution taking all over the WWE, women in the company are constantly getting new opportunities. The latest change that WWE may be making to their programming is the addition of a female commentator to their commentary team. According to reports by the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (H/T Cageside Seats), the change will take place 'eventually'.

Rumours have run rampant in the Internet Wrestling Community about the possible woman to take on the role of the first Female Wrestling Commentator and Beth Phoenix has emerged as the favourite.

In case you didn't know...

WWE have made several changes in the way they have booked women over the recent years, and have given them Main Event matches, as well as matches with Special Stipulations such as the Hell in a Cell. Women also wrestled in the first ever Women's Royal Rumble this January at the Royal Rumble Pay-Per-View and competed in the Women's WrestleMania Battle Royal at WrestleMania 34 on the pre-show.

Beth Phoenix is no stranger to making history, and was a part of the Women's Royal Rumble, becoming the first woman to take part in both the Men's and Women's Royal Rumble. She was also the commentator at the Women's WrestleMania Battle Royal and was a regular commentator for WWE's Mixed Match Challenge, alongside Michael Cole and Corey Graves.

The heart of the matter

With all the changes that WWE has made to their style of booking over the recent years, it was only a matter of time before they added a woman to their commentary team.

WWE's three-man commentary teams have not always been widely acclaimed, with commentator's like David Otunga, Booker T and most recently the Coach facing criticism from the fans. On top of that Corey Graves has had to pull double duty for a while now, since Mauro Ranallo and JBL both left the SmackDown Live commentary team.

There is more than enough reason for WWE to make the change and possibly add a more talented female commentator to the team. According to the rumours, Beth Phoenix is the favourite to become the first-ever Female Commentator.

What's next?

While it is not certain when the change in commentary will be implemented, it is time WWE made the decision to move forward with this plan.

Author's take

While it seems like WWE may choose Beth Phoenix at this point, it may be argued they had a more suitable candidate ready to take up the spot in Renee Young.

Young is a professional announcer and is one of the more experienced women in WWE. WWE's reasoning over the choice is not sure at this point in time.
