From the WWE Rumour Mill: No current plans for a women's Royal Rumble match
What's the story?
In the past week, six new female wrestlers made their debuts on the WWE main roster, sparking rumours of a women's Royal Rumble happening for the first time during WWE's Royal Rumble pay-per-view next year. However, Pro Wrestling Sheet has indicated that there are no known plans for such a match yet.
In case you didn't know...
On Monday Night RAW, Paige returned and shocked the WWE Universe when it was revealed that she wasn't alone. She was accompanied by Sonya Deville and Mandy Rose, who helped her to lay waste to Mickie James, Sasha Banks and Bayley.
On the following SmackDown Live, NXT Superstars Ruby Riot, Sarah Logan and Liv Morgan also made their presence felt when they attacked Naomi and Becky Lynch backstage, putting Lynch out of action for a while, and then interrupted the title match between Charlotte and Natalya.
The heart of the matter
With there now being at least 20 women on the WWE main roster many have speculated that this decision to bolster the ranks with six new women is leading to the first time ever Royal Rumble match with only female wrestlers. However, Pro Wrestling Sheet has revealed that the reason was simply that Vince McMahon felt the women's divisions on both brands were getting stale.
The site went on to add that their sources within the WWE have not mentioned any such plans.
With so many debuts at once, rumors began to swirl about a possible women’s Royal Rumble match this year — for what it’s worth though, our sources haven’t heard anything about that being in the works. However, that doesn’t mean it’s not a possibility
What's next?
A lot has been said about the similarities between Paige's group on RAW and Ruby Riot's group on SmackDown, leading to speculation that there is a bigger storyline happening here and that the two trios are connected.
We'll have to wait and see who this pans out, but if that is the case and a Royal Rumble match does happen for the women, you'd have to expect that a six-woman faction led by Paige would have a good chance of winning it.
Author's take
Aside from the fact that it might be battle royal overkill, and the women's match probably wouldn't be given enough time to develop and resonate with the WWE Universe, I can see absolutely no reason why the WWE shouldn't do a women's Royal Rumble match.
