From The WWE Rumor Mill: Rusev to enter WWE Championship picture after returning from injury
What’s the story?
Former WWE United States Champion Rusev will be set to enter the WWE Championship scene on SmackDown Live after he returns from injury, according to Cageside Seats.
In case you didn’t know...
Rusev has been out since undergoing shoulder surgery earlier this year. During the Superstar Shake Up it was announced that Rusev and Lana would both be headed to SmackDown Live but since they were announced with separate video packages, it’s being rumoured that Rusev and Lana will not be an on-screen couple for the time being, with Lana set to wrestle in SmackDown Live’s women’s division.
Rusev later appeared in a video package on the April 25th episode of SmackDown Live, threatening to leave SmackDown Live unless he received a title shot at the upcoming Money In The Bank PPV.
The heart of the matter
Although Rusev did not specifically mention that he wanted to go for the WWE Championship on SmackDown Live, it was implied.
According to Cageside Seats, Rusev will return from injury to challenge for the WWE Championship possibly against Randy Orton seeing that Jinder Mahal isn’t slated to win the title at Backlash.
What’s next?
After being overlooked for much of his time on RAW, Rusev will be looking to use this opportunity to show what he can do, as he looks to ascend the card and earn his rightful place as a main-event heel.
Expect Rusev to challenge for the WWE Championship at Money In The Bank 2017.
Author’s take
Rusev has seen a downturn in fortunes since losing to John Cena at WrestleMania 31, after going more than a year unbeaten after his NXT debut. His move to SmackDown Live can be a blessing for Rusev and could see the “Bulgarian Brute” reach the main-event scene.
