From the WWE Rumour Mill: Original number of participants in Women's Royal Rumble revealed
What's the story?
On the latest episode of Monday Night RAW, Stephanie McMahon made the announcement stating that the WWE Royal Rumble pay-per-view, taking place on the 28th of January, will see the first-ever Women's Royal Rumble match.
The announcement did not mention any specifications about the number of contenders to take part in the match. PW Insider reported that the original idea was to have 15 women take part in the match.
In case you didn't know...
There were rumours regarding the possibility of a Women's Royal Rumble match for a long time. In an interview with Sportskeeda earlier in December, Sasha Banks had revealed there was a possibility that the Women's Royal Rumble match would take place.
This week on RAW, the Six Woman Tag Team main event match was interrupted by Stephanie McMahon. She came out to talk about the revolution that had taken place in the Women's Division in WWE over the years and talked about making history, with Sasha Banks and Alexa Bliss having the first ever Women's match in Abu Dhabi.
She went on to make a major announcement, revealing that the Royal Rumble pay-per-view of 2018 would host the first-ever Women's Royal Rumble match.
The heart of the matter
According to reports by PW Insider, when the idea for the Women's Royal Rumble match had been discussed in November, there were only supposed to be 15 women on the card. According to latest reports, the number of participants is more likely to be around 30.
The announcement of the Women's Royal Rumble match has seen big names tease the possibility of an appearance. Trish Stratus, Michelle McCool, Kairi Sane, Shayna Baszler etc. all tweeted out about the match. There are also rumours that former UFC Champion, Ronda Rousey, can be a surprise entrant in the Rumble.
The official number of participants is yet to be confirmed by WWE.
What's next?
The Women's Royal Rumble is set to take place on the 28th of January on the Royal Rumble pay-per-view, at the Wells Fargo Center, Philadelphia.
Author's take
The Women's Royal Rumble match is a huge step forward for the Women's division. The fact that WWE has gone from 2 minute inconsequential matches for women, to an actual Rumble, shows the impact of the Women's Revolution.
