From the WWE Rumor Mill: WWE wants to make Ronda Rousey-Stephanie McMahon rivalry like Stone Cold-Vince McMahon
What’s the story?
According to the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, WWE’s motive behind signing Ronda Rousey is to make Stephanie McMahon an even bigger figure outside the ring.
The feud between the two could draw inspiration from the famed Stone Cold-Vince McMahon rivalry of yesteryear.
The background
The rivalry between Stone Cold and Vince McMahon was one of the most successful storylines of the 90s and also one of the greatest feuds in the history of sports entertainment.
During the Elimination Chamber PPV on February 25, 2018, Rousey signed her contract but before she that the former UFC superstar was involved in an in-ring altercation with Stephanie McMahon and Triple H. The feud ended with Rousey putting Triple H through a table much to the anger of Stephanie.
The heart of the matter
The Stone Cold-Vince McMahon rivalry elevated the status of the former in the wrestling industry and it was also crucial to the fame of the latter.
The aim of this feud is to possibly build up Stephanie’s profile according to Wrestling Observer Newsletter.
“Rousey is a major sports star. The idea that she was the single most searched female athlete in the U.S. on the Internet in 2017, a year she never competed and for the most part laid low in, speaks volumes. The idea for the program is to make Stephanie a star outside of just the pro wrestling world.”
What’s next?
Rousey is set for a big Wrestlemania debut and the plan seems to be to pair her up with Kurt Angle against Triple H and Stephanie McMahon.
Author’s take
Stone Cold’s promos were legendary and was crucial to the success of his feud with Vince and based on the underwhelming promo Rousey cut during elimination chamber, it will be very difficult for her to recreate that level of impact.
Not just for her, it will be a herculean task for anyone involved.
