Goldberg vs Brock Lesnar won't be happening and here is why

Fans should not get too comfortable with Goldberg’s return to action just yet

Writers are allowed to change their mind. Just the other day, I wrote about how fans were yelling and screaming with joy over the potential return to the ring of Goldberg. The fact he is appearing on Raw next Monday night is reason enough to think a match between the 49-year-old and Brock Lesnar will happen sooner or later.

I’m here too but the excitement to a screeching halt. The former two-time world champion: a one-time WCW World Heavyweight Champion and a one-time World Heavyweight Champion in WWE hasn’t been in a ring in 12 years – ironically at WrestleMania XX in his last match against Lesnar.

WWE spent plenty of time building the confrontation between Lesnar and The Undertaker last season and hope to create the same kind of drama with a match of epic proportion. But let’s put the brakes a bit on this one, as the contract isn’t signed, there isn’t any ink drying on a contract and Goldberg hasn’t stepped into a WWE arena just yet.

I’m not trying to let all the air out of the balloon – I’m just trying to make you understand why this match will not happen. The hype is great. The results won’t live up to it.

First and foremost, 12 years is a long time. There has been talk of this happening at Survivor Series. While Lesnar is always ready for a fight, Goldberg isn’t ring-ready. It would make more sense for this to build as a confrontation at WrestleMania 33, but there are other opponents who could be on the short list to meet the Beast Incarnate.

Welcome to the ring Kevin Owens or Samoa Joe or even Bray Wyatt if the match is finally signed.

Next, the hype around Goldberg is more attributed to his character being added to the WWE 2K17 video game. While there was talk he would return to the ring earlier in the year, the addition to the video game series is what makes this a hot-button topic right now.

Goldberg even said he did not owe Lesnar another match – 12 years in the making. The match itself could be suicide for Lesnar as he may have to carry the match, make Goldberg look good and in the process look weaker than he needs to be.

For the sake of argument, this does not work because his return cannot be a one-off meeting. Goldberg’s popularity is a financial boon for WWE.

There will be more expected of him – much like when Hulk Hogan returned from WCW where he was told he would only be needed for a few matches. It’s not the same situation, but everyone wants to see if Goldberg can do it in the ring more than once.

And finally, if this doesn’t end the speculation, then nothing might fan the flames of anticipation.

Goldberg was rumoured to return to face The Undertaker at WrestleMania 32. The man expected to replace Shane McMahon in the Hell in a Cell did not appear in Dallas.

That’s the match everyone wanted and still wants to see. Would Goldberg agree to stick around long enough to face The Dead Man in Orlando? Probably not.

Goldberg was regarded as one of the most selfish wrestlers in the business and was extremely difficult to work with. He would just as soon take his ball and go home than wrestle another match.

Also take into consideration there is a risk of this match flopping and I think there is more than enough reason will never happen. I may be wrong, but for now I’d like to err on the side of caution. This is a match that shouldn’t happen and may be just hype to sell a few video games over the holiday season.
