Historic frenemies; Future Hall of Fame players & more - 4 WWE tag teams that can break up within the next three months
The bell always tolls at some point for tag teams to eventually break up in WWE. The Rockers ran their course in the 1990s before Shawn Michaels attacked Marty Jannetty. Michaels was catapulted to stardom after the team disbanded.
The Shield reached the pinnacle of success. After Seth Rollins' shocking betrayal, all three members of the group became World Champions. Dean Ambrose (now known as Jon Moxley) moved on to AEW in 2019, but each Hound of Justice can be counted among the biggest stars in the industry.
Several current WWE tag teams could easily break up in the next three months for various reasons, including the next four duos.
#4. #DIY has a tenuous history
Some fans may wonder why #DIY would break up so soon after recently gaining steam as a team in 2024. Tommaso Ciampa and Johnny Gargano were two of the most important stars in NXT history. However, they didn't truly stand out on the main roster until reforming their legendary tag team.
The Blackheart and Johnny Wrestling have already won the WWE Tag Team Titles and will continue to pursue The Bloodline. Could Ciampa turn on Gargano if things don't improve in that chase?
The friends have battled each other numerous times in the past and a heel turn could freshen up Ciampa's character. His greatest success in NXT came as a dastardly villain.
#3. The New Day is one of the greatest teams in WWE history
If one team has more than run its course, it's The New Day. After Big E's unfortunate neck injury, Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods have represented the team for the last three years.
While the team is still profitable and marketable, Kingston and Woods have been treading water for the last few years. They have random feuds and slot in and out of title pictures.
Having Xavier turn on Kofi or even having the former WWE Champion make the shocking move would help both stars. It would open up a spot for a newer team to move up the ranks while allowing Kingston and Woods to move forward as singles stars.
#2. Bianca Belair and Jade Cargill have ping-ponged in the women's tag team division
Watching Jade Cargill and Bianca Belair dispatch the other teams in WWE's poorly booked women's tag team division takes away some of the allure in their matches. With how both women are presented, it's hard to believe that any duo has a legitimate shot in a two-team contest.
For that reason, WWE needs to break up the powerhouse duo. Other women would get the chance to be featured weekly as tag team champs. Either woman could turn heel as their overconfidence and mannerisms better suit heels.
Belair is like a female John Cena, always overcoming the odds while making her opponents seem like afterthoughts. Cargill doesn't really have the mic skills to carry heel promos even though AEW let her.
The EST could have a new life as the heel she played in NXT. Her attitude better fits a heel persona similar to those of Austin Theory, Grayson Waller, and Carmelo Hayes.
#1. Austin Theory and Grayson Waller aren't on the same page
Cracks have been appearing ever since A-Town Down Under lost the WWE Tag Team Titles. It was nice to see #DIY win main-roster gold, but it was short-lived as they quickly lost the titles to The Bloodline.
Waller has thrown Theory into the line of fire multiple times but the former US Champion has forgiven the Aussie each time. Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa pointed this out numerous times during their feud.
Theory actually articulated that things were rough between them during a backstage segment with Baron Corbin and Apollo Crews. It's time for the brash young upstarts to break up and go their separate ways.
