Impact Wrestling News: Austin Aries dethroned as the Impact World Champion

What's the story?

Pentagon Jr. defeated the former Impact Champion, Austin Aries, and Fenix in order to win the Impact Championship at Impact Wrestling's Redemption PPV on 22nd April 2018.

In case you didn't know...

The main event for the PPV, initially, was supposed to be a match between Austin Aries and Alberto El Patron which was scrapped due to El Patron being released by the company; and the main event was made a triple threat between Austin, Pentagon, and Fenix for the Impact Championship, which was also a rematch of the Impact vs Lucha Underground event at WrestleCon.

Lucha Underground and Impact Wrestling have an on-going partnership as many of the LU Superstars such as Johny Impact and Brian Cage are also regulars on Impact Wrestling.

The heart of the matter

It is commendable how the new Impact Management under Scott D'Amore and Don Callis have managed to turn the whole product around in a positive manner.

Another great example of their great management is how they dealt with the entire El Patron situation and regardless of the fact, presented a great show for the Impact fans which included a lot of surprises including Pentagon Jr. winning the Impact Championship.

What's next?

This win would come as a shock to everyone as most people would have expected Aries to retain the Championship due to Pentagon and Fenix primarily being Lucha Underground superstars and never having appeared on Impact Wrestling before this show. So, it will be interesting to see what direction this change is going to take Impact Wrestling to.

Author's take

Impact has been moving in a great direction and I think having Pentagon win clearly shows how seriously they are taking their tie-ups with other promotions.

I do feel there is a strong possibility of Austin Aries winning back the belt during their next set of tapings or they may have a Lucha Underground invasion angle; we will just have to wait and see.
