Impact Wrestling News: Former WWE Superstar wins title during Canada tapings
What’s the story?
This week on Impact Wrestling television tapings in Ottawa, Canada, former WWE Tag Team Champion Matt Sydal defeated Ethan Carter to become the new Impact Grand Champion.
In case you didn’t know…
Earlier this year, Matt Sydal left New Japan Pro Wrestling and made his return to the Impact zone on the month of April. Ever since making his comeback to the company, Sydal has been in a role and has defeated marquee names such as the likes of Trevor Lee, Eddie Edwards, and Low Ki and more.
In September, Sydal faced off against GFW Champion Eli Drake in his first ever title challenge in the promotion, but despite putting up a valiant effort he failed to dethrone Drake.
However, at this year’s Bound for Glory event Sydal had the chance of capturing the X-Division Title in a six-way match, but the former IWGP Junior Tag Team Champion failed to win the match and still was not able to win his first gold in the Impact Zone.
The heart of the matter
At the recent Impact TV Tapings in Ottawa, Canada, Matt Sydal got the chance of winning his first ever championship in the company as he went toe-to-toe with Impact Grand Champion, EC3 with his championship on the line. The two men faced each other in a normal match with no judges or rounds, which is the actual Impact Grand Championship’s gimmick.
In the later stages of the match, Carter had Sydal in a Fireman’s Carry and on the second rope, but Sydal was resilient enough to reverse the move into a Sunset Flip Powerbomb and followed it up with a Shooting Star Press to win the match.
This was the first time Matt Sydal had won a championship in the Impact Zone as he ended EC3’s reign at 128 days.
What’s next?
As Sydal has now finally won a belt in the Impact Zone, he would look forward to keeping it for some time and defend it against some of the top names in the company right now.
Sydal's win was on a Genesis themed episode of Impact Wrestling and it will be telecasted in January of 2018.
Author’s Take
Personally, I think it was about time for Impact Wrestling to put a championship around Sydal’s waist and I believe he will make a great Impact Grand Champion.
