Impact Wrestling News: Shocking name becomes Impact Grand Champion (spoilers)

From a storyline perspective, this may be quite an interesting development
From a storyline perspective, this may be quite an interesting development

What's the story?

Anything can happen in Impact Wrestling and when we say that, we mean just about anything. We had, only hours ago, reported that Matt Sydal was a double champion, holding both the Impact Wrestling Grand Championship and X-Division title.

Matt Sydal gifted Josh Mathews the Impact Grand Championship, calling the man his spirit guide. We thank Jacob Cohen and No DQ for this baffling update.

In case you didn't know...

Josh Mathews is currently the colour commentator for Impact Wrestling, where he calls the matches alongside play-by-play announcer, Jeremy Borash.

Prior to the same, Mathews and Borash were both battling one another in a feud and as a result, Mathews did wrestle both during Impact Wrestling's India tapings and at Slammiversary 2017.

All said and done, Mathews is not a full time performer, and the future of this Championship should be quite interesting to follow.

The heart of the matter

According to the report, Sydal came out to thank the fans but went on to say that it was his spirit guide that had helped him along the way to this Championship win. Well, his spirit guide was none other than Josh Mathews.

Mathews came out and mentioned how Matt Sydal was centered. He asked the audience to center their chi as well. The two, thereafter had an interesting exchange of gifts.

Mathews gave Sydal a mask of his spirit animal. Okay, then.

Sydal gave Mathews the Impact Wrestling Grand Championship.

What's next?

Because of the strange nature of this development, it's impossible to predict what's next. Suffice to say, Mathews won't be a fighting Champion. It'll be interesting to see how this title is defended in coming months.

Author's take

As baffled as I was when the news first surfaced, I like it. Mathews and Borash had the best Impact Wrestling segment of the year at Slammiversary 2017, when they had their Hardy-esque battle.

If this storyline gets booked in an interesting manner, I see no reason why it cannot be just as good, if not much better.
