Indie/WWE News: Rey Mysterio officially signs with Aro Lucha promotion
What's the story?
Tennessean.com reports that Rey Mysterio has officially joined Aro Lucha, a company based in Nashville, Tennessee.
The promotion confirmed that the former WWE Star will be a performer as well as the co-owner of the upstart promotion that will also have its own television show.
In case you didn't know...
Rey Mysterio returned at this year's Royal Rumble to a solid reaction and was rumored to sign a part-time deal with WWE in aftermath of the Rumble.
Initially pitched to be John Cena's WrestleMania 34 opponent, Mysterio was said to initiate talks with Triple H regarding one final run before he sustained an injury at an indy show.
The former WWE Champion's future was thus shrouded in controversy ever since the news of his injury broke out until today.
The heart of the matter
Aro Lucha isn't your average independent wrestling promotion as the fans will have a minuscule stake in the company. Mysterio opened up about his involvement with the novel initiative and also spoke about his role in the aspiring promotion:
“I think what we are doing with Aro Lucha being fan-owned is revolutionary. We are giving the fans something they have never had before, a voice and a chance to get in on the action.”
CEO of the company, Jason Brown further delved into the fans' power of influencing the product and stated that the passionate Aro Lucha universe would get a better chance of voicing their opinions regarding storylines and characters.
The article goes on to reveal that Mysterio was indeed considering a move to WWE before signing up with the Nashville-based promotion. However, no further details were provided regarding the same.
Along with the blockbuster announcement, the promotion even released a preview of their pilot episode:
What's next?
It seems the WWE Universe would have to prolong their wait to see Mysterio back on Raw or SmackDown as the three-time WWE Champion looks to be committed to a new project.
Author's take
It's 2018 and I can deal with Mysterio not being a part of the WWE landscape however beneficial he may be for the Cruiserweight division.
In all honesty, Aro Lucha seems like an exciting and fresh job for the master of the 619 to sink his teeth into. The promotion sold out its first event in December and has been holding events in and around Texas to decent crowds. With Mysterio on board, the sky is indeed the limit.
