Indie Wrestling News: Billy Corgan reveals future plans for NWA
What’s the story?
On this week’s episode of Ten Pounds of Gold, the NWA’s new owner, Billy Corgan, announced that Tim Storm would defend the company’s heavyweight title later this month against Nick Aldis.
In case you didn’t know…
Earlier this year, it was reported that Billy Corgan -- of the band Smashing Pumpkins has agreed to purchase the National Wrestling Alliance, including its name, trademarks, and also the Championship belts.
The report was confirmed by Tharpe on 1st May 2017, as all of NWA’s trademarks were handed to Billy Corgan’s Lightning One Production from Tharpe’s International Wrestling Corporation.
Corgan’s ownership reign began from October 1, 2017, as he took charge of both the promotion and its championships as well.
The heart of the matter
Earlier in the week, Billy Corgan revealed his first initial plans for his NWA promotion during the recent Ten Pounds of Gold episode — which is produced by Corgan himself.
Corgan claimed that the first step for NWA was going to be a huge one as the reigning and top champion of the promotion, Tim Storm, would defend his belt against former GFW World Champion Nick Aldis — aka Magnus.
It was reported by Corgan himself that Aldis will wrestle for the title later this month during the promotion’s Hollywood tapings, which will take place on November 12.
Tim Storm first won the NWA Title back on October 21, 2016, when he defeated Jax Dane in Sherman, Texas. In doing so, Storm also made history by becoming the oldest wrestler, at 51-years-old, to win the NWA Heavyweight Championship.
What’s next?
Tim Storm is currently in his first reign as the NWA Heavyweight Champion — a title which was previously held by the likes of Ric Flair, Harley Race, and AJ Styles.
Come November 12, Storm will defend his title against former TNA superstar Nick Aldis. It will be interesting to see if Storm manages to retain the title which he was now held for over 376 days.
Author’s take
If the NWA wants to make a mark once again on the world of professional wrestling, they should start by putting the belt on Nick Aldis — who, in my opinion, is a very capable wrestler.
