Is WWE heavily reliant on Charlotte Flair?
Ever since she stepped foot inside the ring, Charlotte Flair was destined for greatness. The daughter of Ric Flair, whom many refer to as the "Greatest of All Time," had a lot to live up to. This wasn't the first instance of The Nature Boy's children getting involved in wrestling. His sons, David and Reid Flair, have previously plied their trade in the business but never able to reach the heights that one would have hoped.
Therefore, when Charlotte debuted in 2013, people had high hopes from her as someone who would carry on the legacy of the 16-time World Champion. Flair, on her part, was quite athletic in her early days and played Volleyball during her time in Providence High School she was even the team's captain.
As mentioned earlier, Charlotte Flair made her wrestling debut at WWE's developmental territory, NXT in the year. The Queen would capture the NXT Women's Championship within a year of debuting in the yellow brand by defeating Natalya at the inaugural NXT Takeover event on May 29, 2014. Charlotte would debut on the main roster in July 2015 as part of Team PCB and the rest, as they say, is history.
Charlotte has been at the forefront of WWE's women's evolution right from day one and continues to be the center point of the company's women division. Ever since debuting on the main roster in 2015, The Queen has either been a champion or in title contention for the majority of her main roster run. Flair has already racked up eight women's titles, the most in WWE history. She is the most protected superstar in the women's division.
With Flair once again challenging Becky Lynch for the SmackDown Women's Championship at Money in the Bank, the question in everyone's mind is why is the WWE once again re-hashing a feud/match that we've already seen? WWE putting its weight behind Flair time and time again despite the fans not wanting to see it go on prove that slowly but surely The Queen is turning out to be the female version of Roman Reigns.
Flair has been the most pushed superstar on the main roster for the past few years, second only to The Big Dog. Her win over Asuka before WrestleMania 35 and at SummerSlam last year received a lot of fan backlash. WWE has some of the most accomplished female wrestlers in the world but the company seems to be heavily reliant on The Queen when it comes to high-profile matches and main event spots. Names like Bayley, Sasha Banks, and Asuka have constantly been overlooked despite being phenomenal in-ring performers while Charlotte is being handed opportunities after opportunities despite the fans not wanting to see her in the main event spot.
The modern wrestling fan is very patient and doesn't take too kindly when fed with the same old thing over and over again and will turn on a performer in a blink of an eye. Flair had to live with this in late 2018 where despite a babyface, she was booed heavily during her feud with Becky Lynch.
While Flair will undoubtedly go down in history as the most decorated female superstar in WWE, the company shouldn't heavily rely on The Queen every time as it may lead to fan cooling down on her, something which the company wouldn't want to happen.
