Is WWE planning on bringing back a retired Championship?

WWE is working on a great way to make the best of underutilised talents

Being brawny and muscular was the criteria to make it big back in the day, but those days are long gone as the fans these days, buy into talent and not just the look. WWE also realises that and have pushed guys like Daniel Bryan to the higher echelons of the card.

If recent speculations are any indication, the Cruiserweight division and Championship could be back via a tournament styled series.

To focus on the lightweight wrestlers on the roster, a multi-week WWE Network series is reportedly in the works revolving around the lightweight wrestlers in the WWE. The exact details of the same are quite sketchy, but a 10-episode tournament style show featuring ‘unkown wrestlers’ is what the WWE are aiming for.

The wrestlers would be names that have never wrestled for the WWE – main roster or NXT – and would weigh less than 205 pounds. A Japanese style tournament was also being talked about backstage, but that’s just speculation.

Another idea rumored to have been pitched for the series is to indie wrestlers fighting for WWE contracts if they somehow got over with the fans. On similar lines, WWE also thought about having big name indie wrestlers go up against the developmental talents and in turn, give the latest NXT recruit –  Manny Andrade (La Sombra) – a huge debut.

By the looks of it, WWE is looking to bring back the cruiserweight division and hopefully, the Cruiserweight Championship in the process. With many underutilised talents on the roster, this could be the best bet for the Vince McMahon and co.
