WWE News: Jim Cornette Discusses WWE's Use of 'War Games'
What's the story?
Recently, WWE made a major announcement with the return of WCW's iconic War Games match. The next NXT Takeover is where the match will return, but according to Jim Cornette, War Games should've been around for years.
In case you didn't know...
On October 4th, Triple H announced that the upcoming NXT TakeOver event will bring back the classic War Games match. It's been seventeen years since the last War Games took place on Monday Night Nitro on September 4, 2000. Although some wouldn't consider this an official War Games. Prior to this, the last official War Games took place at Fall Brawl '98 between Team WCW, Team NWO, and Team NWO Wolfpack.
War Games is such a unique concept, mainly due to the fact that it requires multiple rings to pull off. There are two rings side by side with a cage binding them from the top. Most suspect the reason for the WWE to have avoided this match over the years is due to the sheer amount of space required to pull it off.
The heart of the matter
On Jerry "The King" Lawler's podcast, "Dinner With the King," Jim Cornette appeared to give his thoughts on recent developments within the wrestling world, specifically the return of War Games in NXT.
I thought they should have done War Games from the very first. That's one of the greatest gimmick matches that consistently worked.
He also stated that he understood how WWE could be hesitant about bringing in the WCW staple, saying that they might believe War Games to be too difficult to be shown to TV. However, Cornette would go on to say that he thinks it's worth the risk and that they should try to bring back more WCW matches or PPVs.
What's next?
NXT TakeOver: War Games will take place on November 18th, 2017, with Sanity vs The Undisputed Era vs AOP and Roderick Strong taking place in the main event.
Drew McIntyre will also defend his NXT title against Andrade Almas, and a new NXT Women's Champion will be crowned in a Fatal-4-Way between Ember Moon, Kari Sane, Peyton Royce and Nikki Cross.
Author's Take
WWE bringing back War Games is probably one of the better surprises of the year, and Cornette is right about WWE bringing back more WCW themed PPVs or matches. War Games might be a bit difficult to do on the main roster, but with the IWC filled audience that NXT usually has, bringing back nostalgic matches from WCW could do wonders for the developmental system.
Maybe something like World War 3 could be done as well? There are tons of ideas and match types that took place in WCW that could be brought back. It's been almost two decades since its death.
Older fans will love these call back due to the nostalgia bug, and the younger fans will get to see things they've never experienced before. Plus, with the talent on both the NXT and main roster, even the sloppiest WCW invention can be made into something worth watching.
