John Cena gets positive review for movie cameo

John Cena

The fact that John Cena has a screen presence is not even up for debate, but what has been a constant surprise this year has been the warm reception his appearances in the movies have gotten.

After earning plaudits for a brief role in Judd Apatow’s ‘Trainwreck’ earlier this year, Cena has a cameo in the Mark Wahlberg – Will Ferrell comedy which is a Christmas release this year.

While the movie as such got negative reviews, Variety film critic Geoff Berkshire wrote the following and mentioned Cena’s appearance:

“It might qualify as edgy if it wasn’t all so tedious and trite. Ferrell and Wahlberg could play these broadly conceived characters in their sleep, which actually appears to be the case for long stretches of screen time here, and never duplicate the chemistry they demonstrated in “The Other Guys.”

Cardellini is thoroughly wasted in a role that’s pure plot device. It’s not until John Cena shows up, in a clever cameo cannily playing off a memorable scene in “Trainwreck,” that true inspiration strikes. Appropriately enough, that happens right before the closing credits.”

That is some heavy praise coming from one of the widely followed movie critics and it bodes well for the 15-time WWE champion, who has another movie coming out soon when he plays a drug-dealer in the comedy flick ‘Sisters’.
