John Cena vs Undertaker: Why this match can be the best retirement match possible for The Deadman
There are very few “once in a lifetime” matches that exist in the WWE. These rare and few usually revolve around The Rock (The Rock vs John Cena, The Rock vs Hulk Hogan) and usually take place at the Grandest Stage of Them All, Wrestlemania.
There has been one match that Vince McMahon has been saving, two of WWE’s biggest stars ever and those two stars are the “Face That Runs the Place” John Cena and “Phenom” The Undertaker.
This was heavily rumoured to be the main event of Wrestlemania 32 in Dallas, Texas last year until Cena had to get shoulder surgery. Each represents decades at the top of the WWE and both are easily members of the WWE Hall of Fame.

These two men have made Wrestlemania their home, from Undertaker’s unprecedented streak of 21 undefeated Wrestlemania streak to John Cena’s 8 WWE title matches at the Grandest Stage of Them All. This match needs to happen and should also be The Undertaker's final match at Wrestlemania.
Two icons of their generations
Undertaker and John Cena are two of the most successful creations of Vince Mcmahon. Both have been 100% company men; never leaving the WWE.
The Undertaker started out in the early 90s with Hulk Hogan, when everyone was jumping to WCW for higher paychecks, he stayed ushering in and becoming on the of the biggest players in the Attitude Era. John Cena brought a spark to the Ruthless Aggression Era of the mid 2000s, later becoming the biggest star of the newest PG Era.
Cena and Taker have both headlined countless Wrestlemanias. Both have been the biggest part of the main event scene for at least a decade. There will never be another gimmick as successful as the Undertaker and there will never be a superstar quite like John Cena. These two are legends the likes of which will never be seen again.
When they finally meet it will be a once in a lifetime match.
A bout that’s never been seen before
In 2016 you have almost 10 hours of WWE wrestling a week to watch. This also means WWE has 10 hours of wrestling to fill every week. We live in a day and age where everyone has fought everyone else.
New rivalries are few and far between, The Undertaker and John Cena, however, fit into this not done to death criteria. These two have only faced one on one a few times, the last one being a decade ago.
They have also battled in a good match from Vengeance 2003 for the WWE title belt in a Hell in the Cell, but Cena was still working on becoming the Cena we know today and Undertaker was doing his early 2000 USA biker gimmick.
Both have changed drastically since then and the pairing could be a breath of fresh air for WWE fans who believe that the product is getting bland.
Undertaker needs to retire
The Undertaker is old, there is no other way to put it, and this age is starting to hurt the quality of his matches. Over a span of seven months he wrestled two different Hell in the Cell matches.
While his showdown at Summerslam and Hell in the Cell were good, his Bray Wyatt matches were nothing to write home about. The Shane McMahon match looked exactly as it sounds, two dudes almost 100 in combined age getting really tired and working to a huge spot.
Undertaker has worked some really great angles and had some of the best matches in the history of wrestling, no one is disputing that. But why keep him going if his age is getting in the way.
His storylines have made less and less sense as time has gone on. Why was he even feuding with Bray Wyatt or Shane McMahon? With him appearing at such a small amount of shows he doesn’t have time to work out the complex storylines we have seen in his well-decorated past.
By having one last well worked and well-written storyline between Cena and Undertaker, we could finally bid the Deadman adieu.
This could break John Cena’s rut
John Cena hasn’t been quite the Superman he has looked like in the past. He has still not beaten AJ Styles. Jon Stewart beat him up at 2015’s Summerslam. He traded wins with Kevin Owens last year as well.
Not exactly the “LOL Cena Wins” meme of the past. John Cena is also on the tail end of an amazing career, so why not send him off with a big hoorah. Cena will most likely beat the Ric Flair's record of 16 World Heavyweight Titles. So he needs to win the title at least two more times.
WWE could use the Undertaker win to project Cena back into Superman mode. The other man to beat The Undertaker. After Mania he can go on to finally beat the one man who has his number AJ Styles. Returning Cena to his former glory.
The match would be awesome
Imagine the move set these two could have at Wrestlemania. After what would hopefully be one of the best Undertaker entrances of all time, the match would start with a handshake, which alone would get a pop.
The two then throw punches getting the fans worked up. The crowd pop of Undertaker’s Old School being caught by John Cena and placed into an FU. The 5 Knuckle Shuffle being countered by the classic Undertaker sit up.
Long stretches of time spent trapped in an STFU or Hell’s Gates. This would get even the dudes who live to chant “John Cena Sucks” cheering like little kids. Both these two have such an iconic move sets the entire match would be filled with exciting segments.
The final sequence of events would have to show John Cena kicking out of the last ever Tombstone Piledriver and getting Undertaker into the AA putting Taker on his back for his very last 1..2..3.
The place would erupt, for a match that would have to be the main event because the “THANK YOU TAKER” chants would probably go on for hours. The Undertaker finally being able to Rest In Peace.
