Opinion: Kofi Kingston winning the WWE Championship at WrestleMania opens up long term booking possibilities
Last night at the Elimination Chamber Pay Per View, Kofi Kingston stole the show for the second time in less than a week. However, he came up just short of winning the WWE Championship, but it just made the crowd get behind him.
If Kingston goes on to challenge Daniel Bryan for the WWE Championship at WrestleMania and wins it, it opens up the door for some great long-term possibilities.
To begin with, A Kingston-Bryan match at WrestleMania can tell the story of Kingston waiting eleven years for his chance at a one on one match for the World Title and it would be on the Grandest Stage of Them All.
He would also be in the same position Bryan was in 2014: the most over guy on the roster getting a title shot that happens organically. The New Day also would be the perfect foil to Erick Rowan and whoever else joins Bryan's stable, possibly a returning Luke Harper. The pop in MetLife Stadium when Kofi pins Bryan to become champion would be amazing.
However, the long-term possibilities are even better. After Kofi fends of Bryan in a rematch, which would likely occur at the Pay Per view following WrestleMania. The build towards Money in the Bank would begin, where it would be announced that Big E and/or Xavier Woods would be participants. I would have Big E win the Money in the Bank contract and have some tension begin to build between the New Day.
At first, it would be friendly tension, but say after Kofi is beaten down by a heel and New Day come out for the save, Big E could tease cashing in on Kofi but decides otherwise since he wouldn't do that to his brother.
The next week, Big E would announce that he is cashing in his Money in the Bank contract against Kofi at SummerSlam. During the match, some shenanigans involving Xavier Woods would occur causing a screwy finish.
On the following Smackdown, Big E would be upset with Xavier claiming that he had Kofi beat until he got involved. Kofi would come out and jokingly disagree. A match would be made later that night, and if Xavier wins, he will get a WWE title shot. Big E would interfere in the match, leading to a no contest and this sets up a New Day Triple Threat match for the WWE Championship.
Not only does a Kofi Kingston WWE Championship reign give us short term gratification with Kofi finally winning "The Big One" after 11 tears and on the biggest stage possible at WrestleMania, but it also opens up doors for great long-term storylines, which would ultimately end in a New Day Triple Threat match, much like what we saw with The Shield a few years ago at Battleground.
