Konnan talks about his meetings with Vince McMahon

What’s the story?

In a recent conference call interview with WrestlingInc.com, former WWE star Konnan talked about his relationship with Vince McMahon and his Max Moon gimmick.

In case you didn’t know…

During his run in the WWE, Konnan played a “cyborg from the future” gimmick that was named Max Moon (Also regarded as The Comet Kid).

However, after a dispute with owner Vince McMahon, Konnan did not want to show up for then-WWF events. Also, his rising popularity in Mexico and backstage heat with several WWF superstars were the other reasons behind Konnan's bitter experience in the company.

Vince himself seemed disappointed as he had heavily invested in the Max Moon character, that ended up leading nowhere.

The heart of the matter

During his chat with Raj Giri (owner of WrestlingInc.com), Konnan admitted that it was him who came with the Max Moon idea and McMahon agreed to it and decided to purchase a 13,000 costume for the character.

"The Max Moon thing is very easy. When I had met Vince McMahon, I told him about this idea I saw in Japan for this animated robot. He was like, 'Alright, we'll do it,' and we did.”- Konnan.

Konnan said that due to his overwhelming popularity in Mexico, it became a big headache for him to work for WWF and as the Max Moon. He claimed that by that point he had already become a huge draw as a wrestler, and was getting paid quite well.

“I had done this soap opera and rap record and it was doing good. So when I went to TV, I was like, 'Bro, I'm the man in Mexico, why am I coming to WWE?' So I stopped going."- Konnan stated when asked about why he stopped doing WWE shows.

When asked about his relationship with Vince and their interactions since the Max Moon incident, Konnan claimed that he wasn’t sure if he still had heat with the chairman of WWE or not. He admitted that all of their meetings have been warm-hearted, and they have not discussed anything about the Max Moon issue.

“When I've seen Vince backstage it's, 'Hey, what's up Konnan?' Stephanie, everybody. When they don't want you there, they let you know. I know that they've even stopped people from actually being in the dressing room, they've never done that to me. So I'm not sure if the heat is still there or what the deal is, but that's the story."- Konnan added.

What’s next?

Konnan is currently working with Impact Wrestling and is the manager of the Latin American Xchange (Homicide, Ortiz, Santana, and Diamante). He seems to be helping the company in a lot of ways; one of the recent examples is him trying to convince his close friend, Rey Mysterio to sign with the company.

Although Mysterio didn't sign with the company, Konnan said that his goal is to try and work things out between Impact and Mysterio and convince the former WWE World champion to sign with the company.

Author’s take

It is surely a feel-good moment to see Konnan not having heat with Vince McMahon as he has always been a personal favorite of mine.

Konnan may have ended his relationship with WWE on bad terms but has surely helped a lot of other companies such as AAA and CMLL in a lot of ways for which he deserves all the credit in the world.
