Legendary WWE tag team to make blockbuster return and dethrone DIY as champions? Chances explored

Tommaso Ciampa and Johnny Gargano shockingly dethroned the Motor City Machine Guns (Alex Shelly and Chris Sabin) as WWE Tag Team Champions on last week's episode of SmackDown. Gargano turned heel during the match, giving a low blow to Chris Sabin and betraying his long-time friends.

And now, the fans might witness a legendary tag team return and dethrone DIY as tag team champions. The superstars in question are Matt and Jeff Hardy aka The Hardy Boyz. The 13-time World Tag Team Champions are considered one of the greatest tag teams in wrestling history.

They have won titles in WWE, Total Nonstop Action, and Ring of Honor. The Hardy Boyz are signed with TNA, where they debuted a few months ago after leaving Tony Khan's All Elite Wrestling (AEW).

The Hardy Boyz recently expressed their interest in clinching the NXT Tag Team Titles, as that's the only accomplishment they haven't achieved yet in the Stamford-based promotion. Since there is now a collaboration between WWE and TNA, where several talents like Joe Hendry and Jordynne Grace have appeared at NXT, there are speculations that The Hardy Boyz might make a special appearance in WWE. Later, they can quit TNA and sign up with WWE to win the Tag Team Championship.

While speaking to Kevin Kellam of Sportskeeda, Matt Hardy said that he aspires for one final run in the Stamford-based promotion before going into the HOF.

"Really important that we have a great tag team run here at TNA. You know, maybe ultimately do some WWE stuff and have a great closing moment there and do the Hall of Fame. I mean we are really enjoying what we are doing and we just, we are at the stage in our career where on top of wanting to cement our legacy, we want to try and get back and work with younger guys. The generation beneath us," he said.

What might happen is that the MCMG might take help from The Hardy Boyz to remove the DIY as the tag team champions. The Hardy Boyz might appear at NXT and then soon return to SmackDown, where they remove the DIY as the current champions. Then, they might feud with the MCMG, which would be another historic match feud.

Why did the Hardy Boyz quit WWE?

The Hardy Boyz returned at WrestleMania 33, winning the RAW Tag Team Champions in a Fatal Four-Way ladder match. However, their relevance waned down after they dropped the titles, and Jeff was booked for a single run.

Later, he got injured, and Matt Hardy also worked as a singles superstar. Further, Jeff Hardy wasn't considered a main eventer and was booked with superstars like Austin Theory and Jake Sullivan. While Matt Hardy left the company in 2020, Jeff Hardy quit the company in 2021 due to certain disciplinary issues.

However, it's all past now. The Hardy Boyz are in the last leg of their wrestling careers, and they might plan to return to the Stamford-based promotion to finally have a brief run before hanging up their boots.
