Newly-drafted stable to attack top stars? - 5 possible finishes for Rey Mysterio vs. Edge vs. AJ Styles on WWE SmackDown
WWE RAW kickstarted the World Heavyweight Championship Tournament tonight. The opening bout saw Seth Rollins defeat Damian Priest and Shinsuke Nakamura in a Triple Threat Match. Later in the same show, Finn Balor defeated The Miz and Cody Rhodes, partly thanks to Brock Lesnar.
Finn Balor and Seth Rollins clashed in an epic main event. In the end, The Visionary won his second match of the night and will now go on to Night of Champions and battle whoever wins the SmackDown end of the tournament.
One of the two Triple Threat Matches on SmackDown will pit three fan favorites against each other. Hall of Famers Edge and Rey Mysterio will clash with AJ Styles.
A bout with three all-time greats already excites fans, but how will it end? Could a stable or two interfere in the bout and shake things up? Could The Ultimate Underdog pin his former tag team partner? This article will look at various ways the bout may end.
Below are five possible finishes for Rey Mysterio vs. Edge vs. AJ Styles on WWE SmackDown.
#5. AJ Styles could pin Rey Mysterio
AJ Styles is one of the most talented wrestlers in WWE. He first began wrestling in 1998, joining WCW right before the company shut down. He then made a name for himself in Ring of Honor, TNA Wrestling, and New Japan.
The Phenomenal One eventually joined WWE beginning in 2016 and has been a success since. He's a multi-time world champion and a Grand Slam Champion in World Wrestling Entertainment and TNA Wrestling.
Given his experience and incredible stats, AJ can defeat anyone in the middle of the ring. When he clashes with Rey and Edge on SmackDown, Styles may hit a Phenomenal Forearm or the Styles Clash on Mysterio and pick up a big pinfall victory.
#4. Rey Mysterio could defeat his old tag team partner to win
Rey Mysterio is a legend. The WWE Hall of Famer has been wrestling for over three decades and has won gold almost everywhere he's been. Despite his more petite frame, he's even a multi-time world champion.
Interestingly, Rey even once held gold alongside another combatant in the bout. He and Edge held the WWE Tag Team Titles together around two decades ago. They've fought and teamed up off and on in the years since.
An interesting story could be if Rey Mysterio pins the fellow Hall of Famer in the bout. By doing so, he will earn a title opportunity at his friend's expense. Could that make Edge snap and lead to a renewed rivalry?
#3. The O.C. may help AJ Styles win
As noted, AJ Styles has been a major success in WWE, but he doesn't walk alone on Friday Night SmackDown. The former United States Champion is joined by The O.C., a stable he leads.
AJ is joined by former RAW Tag Team Champions Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows, two stars he's been tight with for years. Additionally, "Michin" Mia Yim is part of the crew, although she's a newer member of the team.
With three faction members by his side, AJ Styles may win on WWE SmackDown thanks to the chaos the group could bring. Gallows & Anderson aren't above interfering, even if Styles is a babyface. Plus, Michin could cause a distraction. Don't be surprised to see The O.C. help AJ stand tall.
#2. Edge may win cleanly on WWE SmackDown
Both Rey Mysterio and AJ Styles are highly decorated WWE Superstars, but almost not as much as Edge. The Rated-R Superstar has a list of accolades nearly unmatched by anyone else.
He's an 11-time world champion, which is impressive. Beyond that, Edge has held the WCW United States Championship, WWE Intercontinental Championship, and he's even had 14 tag team title reigns with six different partners.
Given the rumors of Edge possibly retiring later this year, he has little time to add to his impressive resume. He could cleanly win here, likely by hitting The Spear, and even win the World Heavyweight Championship before it's too late.
#1. The Latino World Order may aid Rey Mysterio
Rey Mysterio has wrestled all over Mexico, Japan, ECW, WCW, and of course, WWE. He recently reformed a stable from his past.
The Latino World Order is a faction on SmackDown featuring Rey, Zelina Vega, Santos Escobar, Cruz Del Toro, & Joaquin Wilde. Carlito and Bad Bunny have also joined the stable, but it remains to be seen if they'll appear again soon.
Regardless of which members may appear, the LWO being ringside could help ensure a victory by Rey. Either from interference or by distraction, if the stable mixes it up with The O.C., the chaos may benefit the veteran lucha star. A quick pin from the legend could move him forward.
