WWE News: Cesaro and Sheamus become #1 contenders for The New Day's tag team titles
By the time the ‘Roadblock: End of The Line’ pay-per-view gets underway at the PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, PA this Sunday, The New Day will have already eclipsed Demolition’s record for the longest tag-team championship reign in WWE history.
However, they will have to make their first post-record title defence at the pay-per-view when they take on the team of Sheamus and Cesaro. Although the duo was unfortunate not to become the champions on the latest episode of Raw, they have ensured that they get another shot at glory.
The two superstars became the #1 contenders for the Raw Tag Team Championship at tonight’s tapings of WWE’s Tribute to the Troops event in Washington D.C., which will be aired tomorrow night on the USA Network.

They emerged victorious in a Fatal Four-Way Match against Golden Truth, the team of Luke Gallows and Karl Anderson and The Shining Stars to set up a date with The New Day in Pittsburgh.
Meanwhile, the current champions had perhaps the toughest night of their extremely long title reign so far as they defended their titles in not one, but two triple-threat matches. To their credit, though, The New Day managed to retain their championship gold on both occasions.
Their scheduled match against Cesaro & Sheamus and Gallows & Anderson kicked off the show and despite being pushed to the limit by both teams, Big E and Kofi Kingston kept the titles firmly in their grasp.
Unfortunately for them, though, Xavier Woods accidentally sprayed champagne on Raw commissioner Stephanie McMahon during their victory party, causing her to storm off in disgust. On Kevin Owens’ suggestion, The New Day were asked to defend their crown yet again against him and Chris Jericho.
Here’s a video of the incident:
General manager Mick Foley added the team of Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns to the mix thereby ensuring that the champions competed in another triple-threat match on the same night. The trio decided to use the ‘Freebird’ rule to their advantage as Kingston was replaced by Woods for the second match.
Although most part of the match was dominated by JeriKO and the former Shield buddies, The New Day somehow found a way to win once again.
In the closing stages of the match, Rollins pedigreed Jericho but Big E pulled him out of the ring, allowing Xavier Woods to pin Y2J and ensuring that they were able to break Demolition’s record later in the week.
