CM Punk was outperformed on the microphone only once, by 28-year-old wrestler, veteran says
One of CM Punk's most famous lines is, "I am the best on this microphone, in that ring, even in commentary. Nobody can touch me!" It is a sentiment that rings true for a lot of wrestling fans, especially today.
Konnan agrees but noted that there was one time when Punk was destroyed on the mic, and that was when The Best in the World minced words with AEW star Maxwell Jacob Friedman, or simply MJF.
Speaking on Keepin' It 100, Konnan praised CM Punk as someone who can be pointed to as the best overall performer today. The veteran feels that the Chicago native's biggest asset in his repertoire is his mic skills. But then Konnan recalled Punk's acclaimed rivalry with MJF in All Elite Wrestling:
"Why wouldn't you understand it?" Konnan wondered why some people do not understand why CM Punk is praised so much. "The guy comes in, does a great promo, out-promos everybody, right? Except when he went with MJF. I don't know what happened there, because MJF just stomped him. He Kendrick Lamar-ed him." [From 5:22 to 5:36]
Seven years after leaving professional wrestling behind him, Punk returned to the ring, signing with All Elite Wrestling in 2021. However, in the summer of 2023, he acrimoniously parted ways with the Tony Khan-led promotion. By November, he buried the hatchet with Triple H and re-signed with WWE.
According to Konnan in the aforementioned podcast, The Second City Saint can surpass Triple H as the greatest all-round performer in professional wrestling.
Is CM Punk vs. Seth Rollins in the works for WWE WrestleMania 41?
When CM Punk announced in October that he would be taking time off to heal up, WWE teased a program with Seth Rollins.
Then it was reported that WrestleMania 41 is the endgame for the two stalwarts. However, at this point, The Best in the World can go any which way, from facing Roman Reigns to challenging Cody Rhodes or Gunther.
Nevertheless, TNA World Champion Nic Nemeth feels that the 46-year-old has finally earned a WrestleMania main event. Where things go in the coming months bear watching, as WWE RAW moves to Netflix on January 6, 2025.
