CM Punk slammed by WWE star with Colt Cabana reference

To the delight of pro wrestling fans and especially CM Punk's followers, the Chicago native disclosed on WWE RAW this week that he is cleared to compete. Punk will face Drew McIntyre in his first televised singles match since returning to World Wrestling Entertainment in November 2023.

The blockbuster clash was made official for SummerSlam on August 3. But there is a catch, something both Drew McIntyre and CM Punk did not see coming. Seth Rollins will act as the special guest referee for the first-time-ever contest.

Needless to say, the upcoming showdown is something McIntyre and Punk have been wanting since the latter tore his triceps at the Royal Rumble in January after The Scottish Warrior's Future Shock DDT.

The Straight Edge Superstar took a dig at his rival a few months ago when McIntyre used his name on a t-shirt, which sold well among fans. But now CM Punk has done the same, using the Scotsman's name.

Taking to X, McIntyre made a reference to when Punk broke the fourth wall to mention his former best friend Colt Cabana during his iconic pipebomb on RAW in 2011. The promo is widely regarded as an important moment in wrestling history.

“I ain’t ever had to put another man’s name on a shirt to sell it” Aging as well as “hey Colt Cabana how you doing?” Drew McIntyre wrote.

As far as we know, Punk and Cabana had a falling out, which stemmed from when the former WWE Champion openly spoke about his distaste for the Stamford-based company in November 2014 after leaving the company acrimoniously on Cabana's podcast.

CM Punk sheds light on his issues with AEW star Colt Cabana

During a sit-down interview with Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour earlier this year, CM Punk opened up about his issues with Colt Cabana. The two had sued each other, but the lawsuits were ultimately settled and dismissed in September 2019.

The Second City Saint returned to wrestling afterward, joining AEW first in 2021. Cabana was already signed to AEW at the time, and is still presently a part of Tony Khan's promotion. Punk recounted a moment when Colt tried to have a conversation with him in order to bury the hatchet:

"I was at the curtain watching the show. When he came up to me and was like, 'Hey can we talk so it's not weird between us?' and I just said, 'I will never talk to you without a lawyer present,'" Punk said.

CM Punk was ultimately terminated by AEW in September 2023 after several backstage controversies. This paved the way for his WWE return three months later.
