CM Punk will surpass 9-time WWE Champion, popular name makes controversial assessment
When CM Punk returned to World Wrestling Entertainment in late 2023, the one thing he made sure was behind him was the beef he had with the company's Chief Content Officer, Triple H. They were on-screen rivals at one point and were originally slated to face each other at WrestleMania in 2014, the year Punk walked out of WWE all burned out.
With a rich history between The Best in the World and the former nine-time WWE Champion, wrestling veterans Konnan and Disco Inferno were asked on the latest episode of their podcast: who was the better wrestler of the two?
Speaking on Keepin' It 100, Konnan agreed that, unlike many athletes of the new generation, who seemingly focus more on the big moves, CM Punk works as a character. The veteran revealed that Punk resonates with him owing to his rebellious nature:
"CM Punk is a very interesting character to me because he was a rebel. And a shoot rebel, too, that he left the company. And I've always been a rebel, and I think the fans like the fact that he was rebellious," Konnan said, drawing comparisons to Stone Cold Steve Austin's persona.
Furthermore, Konnan stated that the Chicago native had a great comeback, pointing to his successful program with Drew McIntyre in 2024. Based on all of this, the veteran feels the 46-year-old WWE Superstar will surpass Triple H as an overall performer in the business.
"And he could wrestle and he could talk. But I would have to say that overall, Triple H has had great classic matches. Good on the microphone, just overall, you know what I'm saying? I will have to pick Hunter. But CM Punk has had a great comeback. The Drew McIntyre [storyline], now he's with The Bloodline. I mean, if he continues at this pace, he might pass Triple H." Has the train left the station for CM Punk vs. Stone Cold?
For years, The Best in the World has been compared to Stone Cold Steve Austin for being similar in nature. Despite their interest to face each other, the stars never aligned for a match to get booked in WWE.
Three years ago, Steve Austin came out of retirement for a one-off match with Kevin Owens. However, Austin set the record straight later, saying that if the right storyline came along, he would lace up a pair of boots again.
Meanwhile, Punk recently responded to whether a first-time-ever contest between the two is possible at this stage. According to The Straight Edge Superstar, all the WWE legend has to do is give him a call.
