Cody Rhodes fighting top WWE star could be a bad idea, says legend
WWE Hall of Famer Bully Ray recently wondered if LA Knight potentially challenging Cody Rhodes at Backlash France would be a correct call.
The American Nightmare finished his story and captured the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship at WrestleMania XL after defeating Roman Reigns on Night Two.
In his first title defense at Backlash France, Rhodes will face the winner of the upcoming match between LA Knight and AJ Styles, who have qualified for the final of the Undisputed WWE Championship Eliminator Tournament. The two superstars are scheduled to clash this Friday on SmackDown.
Speaking on Busted Open Radio, Bully Ray addressed the possibility of Knight challenging Rhodes at the upcoming premium live event. The wrestling veteran pointed out that it might not be a good idea.
"I think you're potentially cutting the audience. I'm not going to say in half. But what if ¾'s of the place cheers for Cody, but ¼ of the place cheers for LA Knight? Cody needs to have his back against the wall at all times. Cody is the type of champion that needs to be fighting underneath at all times. And my concern is that they don't have the type of heels that can keep the pressure on him, like Brock Lesnar did. Or Cody having to overcome, like the torn pec muscle. Or what Roman, or the beatdown that Rock gave him in the rain in Chicago with the blood," he said.
The Hall of Famer added:
"We've seen so much in the past year with Cody. Who is going to be able to top what we've seen? They went out of their way to go through all of these things to get Cody to the point where he finishes his story and becomes champion. Now what?" [H/T: WrestlingInc.]
LA Knight defeated AJ Styles at WWE WrestleMania XL
The Megastar feuded with The Phenomenal One for several weeks, heading into WrestleMania XL. The two squared off on Night Two of this year's Show of Shows in a match that ended in LA Knight's victory.
Ahead of their upcoming fight, The Megastar took to social media to vow to beat Styles again on SmackDown.
"Stackin' wins like it's nothin. @AJStylesOrg couldn't get enough at 'Mania, so now I get to give the good people of Pittsburgh a replay! YEAH!" he wrote.
While The Phenomenal One has held the WWE Championship before, Knight has failed to capture the title in his previous attempts. It would be interesting to see if the 41-year-old will receive a third shot at the biggest prize in WWE.
