Cody Rhodes may defend his WWE Title against Grand Slam Champion at Royal Rumble, says analyst

Cody Rhodes is expected to hold the Undisputed WWE Championship at least until Royal Rumble. WWE analyst Sam Roberts recently suggested The American Nightmare might put his title on the line against a Grand Slam Champion at the premium live event.

The 39-year-old is currently in a heated feud with Kevin Owens. On Saturday Night's Main Event, Rhodes successfully defended his championship against The Prizefighter. However, The American Nightmare was stretchered out of the arena following a brutal post-match attack by his rival. The former Universal Champion then took the Winged Eagle WWE Championship belt and left. He later claimed he was the real champion.

On his Notsam Wrestling podcast, Roberts claimed another square-off between Owens and Rhodes could take place at Royal Rumble:

"I do think that Kevin vs. Cody is a match that we could see at the Royal Rumble. I think that'd be a great match at the Royal Rumble. And I think that Kevin could position it as, 'I've already got the Winged Eagle title and I'm taking the one that you have as well.' But Cody would say, like, 'Well, my plan is to beat you and I'll just keep wearing the one that I have if that's okay,'" he said. [1:08:36 - 1:08:56]

Will the Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes turn heel?

During his match against Kevin Owens at Saturday Night's Main Event, Cody Rhodes made a few moves that were interpreted by some as hints of a potential heel turn.

Speaking on Straight Talk with The Boss, wrestling veteran Magnum T.A. claimed The American Nightmare would eventually become a villain. He stated that he would be hated as much as he is now loved:

"I could see Cody turning heel. I could totally see Cody turning heel because, at some point in time, he can only carry this part of his persona so long. He could probably be equally as hated as he has been loved," he said.

Rhodes has been absent from TV since Owens' attack at Saturday Night's Main Event. It would be interesting to see how this storyline will unfold.
