Cody Rhodes receives major surprise at WWE event

Cody Rhodes returned to WWE almost 900 days ago, and since then he's been a top talent and seemingly a trusted face of the company. Officials have rewarded him with championship reigns and other perks. The second-generation grappler just received a very special surprise in front of a live crowd.

The American Nightmare is currently in Tokyo, Japan for the three-day tour that wraps up on Saturday. Rhodes retained the Undisputed WWE Championship over Shinsuke Nakamura and AJ Styles in a Triple Threat Match on Friday. He then retained against The Phenomenal One today in singles action. After the win, a local official and the Stamford-based promotion's Producer, Shane Helms entered the ring to present Cody with the iconic red robe previously worn by his father, the late Dusty Rhodes.

The American Dream had worked almost 130 matches in The Land of the Rising Sun. Dusty linked up with the legendary Antonio Inoki in almost 30 of those contests. The red robe and hat seen below were from one of the bouts featuring the late Hall of Famer and came from the private collection of a fan.

".@CodyRhodes was gifted his father Dusty’s legendary robe during a heartfelt moment at #WWETokyo 🥺❤️," wrote the promotion on X.

Dusty's last singles match with Inoki ended in a 14-minute double count-out on January 1, 1984, at NJPW New Year Golden Series. The Common Man and Moeru Toukon teamed up for the final time for a win over Sgt. Slaughter and Bobby Duncum on June 3, 1981, at a NJPW event.

WWE continues new Cody Rhodes series

World Wrestling Entertainment launched Cody Rhodes' new YouTube series earlier this month - What Do You Wanna Talk About?, which is a reference to his popular catchphrase for the WWE Universe.

In association with Wheatley American Vodka, the series features the Undisputed Champion interviewing superstars on his travel bus. The premiere guest was Bayley, and the second guest was LA Knight.

The episode with the Women's Champion currently has 440,000 views, while Cody's chat with The Megastar has just over 1 million views as of this writing. This week's episode features Cody talking to R-Truth. The episode has about 200,000 views in around 24 hours.

Rhodes is scheduled to defend the Undisputed WWE Championship against Solo Sikoa at SummerSlam on August 3, in their second televised singles match. Cody won by pinfall on RAW in March 2023, then won by DQ on SmackDown last month. He also has four non-televised singles wins over Sikoa.
