Cody Rhodes says WWE match against Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is Current Era vs. Attitude Era

At WrestleMania XL, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson pinned Cody Rhodes one night before the latter captured the Undisputed WWE Championship for the first time in his career. On RAW the next night, The Rock reminded Rhodes of it and informed the latter that he was coming for the gold. Johnson would also return a mysterious gift that Rhodes had given him ahead of The Show of Shows.

Evidently, a potential match between The Rock and Cody Rhodes is a polarizing concept. However, The American Nightmare has now made a valid argument that justifies the inevitable showdown. Speaking on the Busted Open Podcast, Rhodes talked about how WWE fans always look at the Attitude Era as the measuring stick. However, according to many, the present day is now cited as a better period in the business.

Cody brought up his potential match with The Rock, calling it an accurate representation of the Current Era vs. Attitude Era. He also added that when it mattered, the WWE Universe preferred him over The Final Boss to headline WrestleMania.

"I no longer have the hate side of the love-hate relationship with the Attitude Era, because of what happened with The Rock. My dream really came true. Here, the absolute definitive Attitude Era player returned, and they wanted someone from this era. They wanted somebody now, and we were able to actually juxtapose against each other. I didn't anticipate that The Rock would become this potential opponent for me. But it's a match kind of made in heaven in terms of our different outlooks on the industry and what the industry has become now versus what he thinks it can be." [From 28:38 to 29:18]

Rhodes further pointed to the revenue generated recently, with each event breaking the previous one's record. Cody added that if old-school wrestlers consider that to be the bottom line, then the current era is succeeding big time.

Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes vs. The Rock at WrestleMania Vegas?

While there is much speculation regarding when WWE will book this clash of generations, The Rock's writer Brian Gerwitz recently opened up about the possibility of it happening at WrestleMania 41 in Las Vegas, 2025.

Meanwhile, Roman Reigns was last seen on the grand stage last month. Cody Rhodes also recounted his immediate reaction to WWE's plans for The Rock vs. Roman Reigns on the day of the Royal Rumble in January.
