Current WWE champion speaks on huge title defense; what she was forced to do
A current titleholder in WWE spoke about her successful championship defense at a recent premium live event. She discussed what she was forced to do to retain her championship.
NXT Women's North American Champion Kelani Jordan defended her title for the second time at NXT Heatwave in Toronto, Canada. Jordan faced Sol Ruca and was able to overcome her high-flying moves to remain the champion.
In a post-match interview backstage with Sarah Schreiber, Jordan discussed her match against Ruca, who forced her to pull some stuff out of her "back pocket." It was her first title defense at a WWE PLE and she was already put to the brink.
"I would like to say to Sol. She definitely gave me the workout. I'm a bit tired but she's a superstar. She really challenged me, and also, we're friends, so it's pretty cool to be able to go out there and have a friendly but competitive match. And I think also, we do have similar backgrounds, but she's one heck of an athlete. So I don't know where her genes come from, but she definitely made me have to pull some stuff out of my back pocket," Jordan said. [0:14 - 0:33]
Kelani Jordan won the NXT Women's North American Championship at NXT Battleground in a six-woman ladder match. Jordan first defended her title against Michin on the June 18 episode of WWE NXT.
WWE Superstar got emotional after Kelani Jordan won the NXT Women's North American Championship
Kelani Jordan outlasted five other WWE Superstars, namely Sol Ruca, Lash Legend, Fallon Henley, Jaida Parker, and Michin, to become the first-ever NXT Women's North American Champion.
Jordan had plenty of support including from his real-life partner and SmackDown star Carmelo Hayes.
"She grabbed the (title) and I jumped up. I cried. I actually cried tears of joy. I've done a lot of cool things, and I haven't cried. But that made me actually cry just because I know how hard that girl works. Obviously, you know, I care for that girl. But I just know how hard she works, and she EARNED that," Hayes said in an interview with WrestlingNews.co. [1:05 - 1:22]
It remains to be seen what the future holds for Jordan and who the next challenger will be.
