Dominik Mysterio was not meant to turn heel? WWE legend reveals true behind the scenes story

Dominik Mysterio has come a long way from when he made his WWE in-ring debut four years ago. The moment that made all the difference in his career was when he turned his back on Rey Mysterio.

At Clash at the Castle 2022, Dominik assaulted his father and Edge, subsequently joining The Judgment Day. He and Rhea Ripley were heat magnets for a while until Ripley's popularity grew among the masses. Eventually, 'Dirty' Dom left Mami and sided with Women's World Champion Liv Morgan. The power couple are arguably two of the most despised stars on the roster today.

WWE Hall of Famer Rey Mysterio recounted a behind-the-scenes story of what transpired in the weeks leading up to Clash at the Castle in Cardiff, Wales. Speaking to Chris Van Vliet, the luchador legend revealed he had suggested that he turn on his son instead of the other way around:

"When [Dominik Mysterio] and I were working together, I brought it up to Vince [McMahon] and it was brief—maybe I turn on Dom, and we continue with something along the way," Rey Mysterio said.

But the Hall of Famer changed his mind after his colleagues expressed their opinions. They felt this would have been a wrong move as he was forever a babyface in WWE:

"But getting feedback from some of my colleagues, like, 'No. You're like the babyface that can never be heel. You're Ricky Steamboat. Nobody can ever see you as a heel. I don't think they would buy into it.' I'm glad that I listened, and that they didn't listen to me, because it's the best thing that could have happened to Dom to become the heel and be the evil one," he concluded. [From 0:54 to 1:34]

Liv Morgan played a big role in Dominik Mysterio scoring a pinfall victory over his father for the first time in his career. It happened during a Mixed Tag Team Match on the July 8, 2024, episode of RAW.

Dominik Mysterio assisted Liv Morgan to become the inaugural Women's Crown Jewel Champion

At Crown Jewel this past Saturday in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Liv Morgan picked up a huge victory over WWE Women's Champion Nia Jax.

It was an overbooked match that WWE is best known for, with interferences from Raquel Rodriguez, Tiffany Stratton, and Dominik Mysterio. In the end, 'Dirty' Dom's distraction allowed Morgan to capitalize and take home the win. Dominik Mysterio had some words for the WWE Universe post-match:

"The greatest Women's World Champion. First ever Crown Jewel Champion. Greatest ever to do it. [Take a picture. This is going to go in the history books.] Hang it in the louvre b****!"

Meanwhile, 'Dirty' Dom recently addressed an old wound and that it may be time to settle a score. He was referring to Rey Mysterio's rivalry with CM Punk in 2010, in which he was briefly a part.
