Drew McIntyre reveals the truth behind his abrupt exit when CM Punk returned at the Survivor Series
Drew McIntyre was seen storming out of the arena when the WWE Universe was celebrating the return of CM Punk after nine long years. The Second City Saint’s comeback broke several viewership records along with the composure of Seth Rollins. However, while The Architect chose to lash out during Survivor Series, McIntyre recently revealed why he walked out instead.
Drew McIntyre made an appearance on the latest episode of the Insight podcast with Chris Van Vliet. Speaking about Punk’s return, The Scottish Warrior did admit that he had exited the building that night. Moreover, he also confirmed that instead of his defeat alongside Judgment Day, The Second City Saint was the reason for his departure.
“Yeah, I was pissed off, and I chose to leave the arena because I'm not going to cause an incident that's going to affect everybody's mood afterwards and the guys in the match that worked so hard. People asked me about Seth's and my reaction; maybe that was Seth’s legit reaction, but to me, I couldn't have stood out there if somebody's that close to me that I don't like that much. I wouldn't stand and swear and have people hold me back. I would have walked right up to him and punched him in the face, so I chose to leave the building,” said Drew McIntyre. [From 33:35 - 34:07]
The Scottish Warrior also noted that he is happy that he gets to leave the building whenever he wants. However, he also talked about a time when people weren’t very happy with him backstage.
Drew McIntyre reveals backstage truth behind the moniker given to him by Vince McMahon
Drew McIntyre goes by the nickname ‘The Scottish Psychopath’, which perfectly reflects his unpredictable and reckless nature toward his opponents. However, he was given a nickname by Vince McMahon earlier in his career, 'The Chosen One.’ Speaking with Vliet, The Scotsman revealed that this name and its privileges cost him a lot of backstage heat.
“A lot of people did not like it backstage, so I didn't feel as much backstage with the professional jealousy that I didn't realize how significant it was and the things that were being said then it was all out of jealousy. Why is this kid getting this huge opportunity when I've been here for all these years? But for the opportunities on TV, I certainly did for a period." [From 17:20 - 17:46]
Drew McIntyre also noted that he still isn’t completely sure if he could have done something about his situation back then. However, he also agreed that ‘The Chosen One’ phase did contribute to his growth.
“And looking back, I know obviously I could have done things a little bit differently, but at the same time, I just didn't have those tools in my wheelhouse to do things differently. And we all go through our journeys for a reason to end up at the final destination," said McIntyre. [From 17:46 - 17:58]
Right now, McIntyre has brought CM Punk’s attention back on himself after he saw him eyeing Gunther’s World Heavyweight Title. With Punk’s prestigious bracelet broken, it would be interesting to see how The Straight Edge Superstar reacts to the latest brutal attack on him.
