Ex-WWE champion opens up about working with John Cena; namedrops Roman Reigns & The Usos

Sharing the ring with John Cena has been a dream for many WWE Superstars given his legendary status in the business. One such star Dominik Mysterio had the privilege of working with and against the 16-time World Champion in the company. The Judgment Day star recently shared his insights on the experience.

Back in 2021, when The Cenation Leader returned to Money in The Bank and confronted Roman Reigns, he feuded with former Bloodline members - Reigns, and The Usos (Jimmy, and Jey). To counter The Bloodline's numbers advantage, the former WWE Champion teamed up with Rey Mysterio and his son Dominik.

The Mysterios and John Cena faced The Usos and The OTC in several six-man tag team matches over the next few weeks on WWE house shows. Recently, Dirty Dom opened up about being on the road with The Franchise Player three years ago.

In an interview with Chris Van Vliet on INSIGHT, the former two-time NXT North American and SmackDown Tag Team Champion described working with John Cena as surreal, given his childhood admiration for the legend.

Dominik Mysterio expressed gratitude for the 47-year-old WWE legend's guidance and mentorship, particularly during the Cena vs. Reigns rivalry leading up to SummerSlam 2021.

"It was a surreal moment, because I grew up watching him, had his album, signed and everything. Again, big Cena guy too, growing up. Then, not only that, but when he came back the first time, when did the summer of Cena against Roman, I was along for the ride on that one. All the live events. I was tagging with my deadbeat and Cena against Roman and The Usos. It was me, John Cena, Rey Mysterio, against Roman and The Usos."

The Judgment Day member acknowledged that he didn't deserve to be between the ropes with such WWE veterans but appreciated John Cena's willingness to help him.

"So him being okay with me [being in the match], I shouldn't have been in that [or] in any of those matches leading into SummerSlam. In no way, shape or form should I have been in that ring with any of those guys, maybe my dad. But him being able to do that for me and just giving me his advice, going through 30 plus days of every week, just something different," he said. [H/T: CVV]

Dominik Mysterio would like to have another match with John Cena in WWE

The Cenation Leader and Dom Dom used to team up when the latter was a babyface three years ago. However, in 2022, the young Mysterio turned heel and has been portraying arguably one of the best villainous roles in WWE history.

For those unaware, John Cena and Dominik Mysterio faced each other in a one-on-one dark match in 2023 after an episode of Friday Night SmackDown. That time, The Franchise Player secured a win over the young star.

Cena is set to retire from professional wrestling in 2025. During the same interaction with Chris Van Vliet on INSIGHT, Dominik Mysterio claimed he would like to collide with the former WWE Champion one more time.

"I've actually wrestled John in a dark match for SmackDown. But now I'm the bad guy, and we got to work that one time. So I would definitely love to get back in the ring with him and mix it up," Dominik added.

Only time will tell if WWE has plans to book Dominik Mysterio vs. John Cena during the latter's Farewell Tour next year.
