"Goldberg myth just died" after he lost real-life backstage fight, ex-WWE star says
Bill Goldberg worked for WWE in 2003 and 2004 before returning to the company in 2016. In a recent interview, Maven Huffman recalled how the WCW icon lost his tough-guy reputation after a backstage fight.
In 2003, Goldberg got involved in a legitimate altercation with Chris Jericho in WWE. The two men had issues dating back to their time in WCW, where Goldberg allegedly refused to face the current AEW star.
Maven, a WWE wrestler between 2001 and 2005, told James Romero of WSI about the most memorable backstage fight he ever saw:
"Goldberg-Jericho, just because that was the night that the Goldberg myth just died and the night that the Jericho myth just, I was like, 'Goddam! Chris is not to be toyed with. F**k!'" [0:16 – 0:29]
At the time, Jericho had been an established member of the WWE roster for almost four years. Goldberg, meanwhile, had only just joined the company after two years of speculation about his next move in the wrestling business.
What happened during Chris Jericho and Goldberg's fight in WWE
Maven was set to leave the locker room when the confrontation broke out in front of other wrestlers.
The 2001 Tough Enough winner expected Goldberg to win the fight, but he believes Jericho clearly came out on top:
"Chris being in the dominant position and them being separated, it starting again, and Chris getting in the dominant position again," Maven added. "So, it wasn't like it was an accident the first time. Yeah, crazy. Wouldn't have been the way my money would have been laid on it!" [1:13 – 1:34]
Goldberg appeared on Jericho's Talk Is Jericho podcast in 2022. They discussed their past animosity and confirmed they settled their differences a long time ago.
