Gunther's savage Bret Hart burn on WWE RAW was "pure brilliance," says veteran

WWE RAW emanated from the Scotiabank Saddledom in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, this past Monday. Legendary wrestler and hometown hero Bret Hart showed up to a huge pop from fans. Unfortunately for The Hitman, things went sour afterward.

World Heavyweight Champion Gunther crashed Hart's homecoming in front of the latter's diehard fans. The Ring General buttered up the legendary wrestler, only to eventually state that the latter was a close second to his all-time favorite, Bill Goldberg.

Wrestling veteran Tommy Dreamer commented on the segment in the recent episode of Busted Open After Dark. Dreamer praised the reigning World Heavyweight Champion for incredible heel work.

The veteran admitted that he was "shocked" when Goldberg's name was mentioned during the segment, considering the real-life animosity Bret Hart had for the former WWE Universal Champion.

However, the 53-year-old felt that the ideal end to the segment would have been Gunther chopping The Hitman.

"What does a great heel have to do? A great heel really has to put it on himself. And [for Gunther] to say that [Bret Hart] is the second best of all time? Pure brilliance. He built him up, like I said, 'Wrestlers in the back all respected you, including myself, until I walked a mile in your shoes, Bret! And I know, I'm better than you.' The only way that segment could've ended better, in my opinion, was if Gunther chopped the crap out of Bret Hart. And I know that's not going to happen," he said. [From 4:59 to 5:36]

Veteran comments on the possibility of Gunther vs. Sami Zayn at WWE Bad Blood

During the segment mentioned above, Sami Zayn came to the aid of Bret Hart, blasting Gunther for disrespecting the retired veteran. The former IC Champion again challenged The Ring General for the World Heavyweight Championship. However, the Austrian star declined the challenge again and left the ring.

The Hitman called Gunther a ''coward'' for turning down Zayn's challenge, which led to a brawl between the two RAW Superstars. In the same episode of the podcast, Tommy Dreamer claimed that WWE would book Gunther vs. Sami Zayn for the upcoming Bad Blood Premium Live Event.

"I would bet the farm that we're gonna get a Sami vs. Gunther match at Bad Blood. It hasn't been announced yet, I don't believe. But man, that segment was pure money," he said. [8:14-8:28]

If WWE announces this match for the October 5 PLE, it will mark Gunther and Zayn's second high-profile encounter in 2024. The Underdog from The Underground prevailed over The Ring General at The Showcase of The Immortals earlier this year, ending the latter's record-setting IC Title reign. Could history repeat itself?
