"He lied to them," "He pays for it" - Hall of Famers reveal legitimate real-life fight involving 450 lbs WWE star and The Undertaker
The Undertaker has etched his name all over the history books in the pro wrestling industry. He hasn't been a part of a lot of controversies in and out of the company over the years. However, one controversy that became a global headline very quickly involved The Phenom.
Back in 1997, The Undertaker appeared as a guest on a talk show alongside the legendary 450 lbs star, Vader. The incident took place on TV when the host asked both stars if 'wrestling was fake?' While The Undertaker stayed calm, Vader grabbed the host by his tie, making the incident a global story.
In a recent edition of What Were They Thinking? on Backstage Pass, WWE Hall of Famer JBL addressed the controversy and laid out what actually happened. The legend stated that the question that was asked was not supposed to be asked, which turned out to be the reason the incident happened.
“What happened was they went out on a show when I got to Kuwait… Undertaker and Vader had been on this talk show about wrestling and the tenth question was - ‘Is it fake?’... The guy said he was not gonna ask it, he asked it first. He lied to them. And so I think that was the part where Leon got up. Leon being Vader, grabbed his tie and slacks him around a little bit…” stated JBL. [15:27 onwards]
Gerald Brisco also addressed the controversy and added that while a list of questions where given to the stars initially, that particular question was not a part of it. However, the reporter's urge to ask the question got him to pay the price.
“If you notice 'Taker, he looks like he got off an 18-hour flight, but he’s cool and relaxed like he always is. He handles things different than Leon who’s so high. So, well, the questions start coming… We had a list of questions and that question was not on that list. So the guys goes into the business and he pays for it,” stated Gerald Brisco [16:44 onwards]
